How to Order Cook Out: Drive-Thru, Walk-Up, Dine-In, Takeout, Delivery & Online (2026)
You order Cook Out at the drive-thru or the walk-up window and pay with cash or a card. Cook Out has no app or online ordering of its own, a few stores have indoor seating, and delivery comes through Uber Eats at many stores, while the DoorDash listings we checked were not active.
No official app or online ordering (Oct 2026). Uber Eats lists many stores; app hours can end as early as 9:30 PM. DoorDash listings checked were inactive. Tray about $7.39–$7.99; Jr. Tray from about $5.29.
This guide explains every way to order Cook Out: the drive-thru, the walk-up window, dine-in where a store has a dining room, pickup and delivery through apps, and why DoorDash usually does not work. It walks through ordering a Cookout Tray step by step, gives a word-for-word first-timer script for the speaker, and covers payment. Ordering options were checked against Cook Out’s website and Uber Eats and DoorDash listings in October 2026.

How Do You Order at Cook Out?
You order at Cook Out by pulling into the drive-thru and speaking at the menu board, or by walking up to the outside order window; you pay at the window and take your food with you. Cook Out has no official app and no online ordering on its own website. Some stores have indoor seating, and many stores can also be ordered from through third-party delivery apps, mainly Uber Eats, where the store offers it.

Cook Out was built around takeout. The standard building has two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window and no dining room, so almost every order, at most stores, is a takeout order. Here is how each way of ordering works as of October 2026:
| How you order | Available? | Where you pay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive-thru | Yes, at virtually every store | At the window, cash or card | Most orders, late night |
| Walk-up window | Yes, at most stores | At the window, cash or card | Walkers, students, parked cars |
| Dine-in | Only at stores with a dining room | At the counter | Groups who want a table |
| Official app or website ordering | No | Not applicable | Not available |
| Uber Eats delivery or pickup | At many stores, during app hours | In the app | Ordering from home or a dorm |
| DoorDash | Not active at the listings we checked | Not applicable | Check the app for your address |
Hours vary by store, but most Cook Outs open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and around 4 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Before a late run, check your store on our Cook Out hours guide or find the nearest one with the locations finder.
How Does the Cook Out Drive-Thru Work?
At the Cook Out drive-thru you order at the speaker by the menu board, then pull forward to the window to pay and collect your food. Many stores run two drive-thru lanes, a layout that dates back to founder Morris Reaves’s original idea of serving people who wanted takeout.
The process is the same at nearly every store:
- Pick a lane. If your store has two lanes, use whichever is open and follow the cars ahead of you to the window.
- Read the board first. The menu board lists trays, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, BBQ, sides, drinks and milkshake flavors. Prices vary by store, so the board in front of you is the one that counts.
- Order trays first, then extras. Saying “tray” at the start tells the crew to bundle the entree, two sides and a drink. Add single items and shakes after.
- Listen to the read-back. The speaker repeats your order and gives a total. Fix mistakes here, not at the window.
- Pay and check the bag at the window. Cash and cards are accepted. Check sauces, straws and the number of items before you drive off.
Expect the longest lines at lunch and from about 11 PM to 2 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, especially near colleges and nightlife districts. If the line is wrapped around the building, the walk-up window is often faster for a small order. Our late-night food guide has the best orders before close.
Can You Dine In at Cook Out, or Is It Takeout Only?
Most Cook Outs are takeout only: you order at the drive-thru or the walk-up window and eat elsewhere. Some stores, mostly newer ones, have an indoor dining room with counter service, so dine-in availability varies by store.
The classic Cook Out building has two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window and no indoor seating. Dining rooms are not new, though. The first Cook Out with a sit-down dining room opened in High Point, North Carolina, in 1996, and a number of later stores have added one. Some examples from local news:
Tifton, Georgia (2019): the Tifton Gazette reported that the store opened with a dining room that closed earlier than the drive-thru on some nights, about 10 PM inside versus 2 AM at the drive-thru.
Jacksonville, Florida (2026): the Beach Blvd store, Northeast Florida’s first Cook Out, opened on July 30, 2026, with a drive-thru and indoor seating, according to News4JAX and the Jacksonville Daily Record. See our Jacksonville, FL guide.
How the walk-up window works
The walk-up window is Cook Out’s version of a counter. You step up, order from the menu board on the wall, pay and wait nearby for your name or number. It is the easiest way to order on foot, on a bike, or if you parked to avoid the drive-thru line.
Is everything takeout?
At a store without a dining room, yes: everything is packed to go, whether you came through the drive-thru or the walk-up window. Where a store does have a dining room, the lobby can close hours before the drive-thru, so a 1 AM visit is a drive-thru or window order almost everywhere. If indoor seating matters for your trip, check the listing for that specific store or call it before you go.
Can You Order Cook Out Online or for Pickup?
Not from Cook Out itself. Cook Out has no ordering app, no online ordering on its website and no rewards program as of October 2026. The only way to order ahead is through a third-party app, mainly Uber Eats, where store listings include a Pickup option alongside delivery.
When we checked Cook Out’s official website in October 2026, its menu was limited to Menu, Shakes, Employment, Company, Locations and Contact Us pages. There was no order button, no app download link and no rewards sign-up. Any website or video that describes a “Cook Out app” for ordering is wrong, and sites that look like an official ordering page are not run by Cook Out.
How to order Cook Out for pickup
- Through Uber Eats: open the store’s listing, switch to the Pickup tab, place and pay for the order in the app, then collect it at the store. Ask at the window where app pickups are handed out.
- By just showing up: at most stores the drive-thru or walk-up window is quick enough that ordering in person is the normal “pickup”.
- By phone: Cook Out does not advertise phone-in orders. For a large or group order, call the store first and ask whether it can help; only the store knows what it can handle at a given time.
App orders follow the app’s own hours and menu, which are not always the same as the store’s. Listings we checked in October 2026 showed shorter app hours than the stores, and their menus did not always show trays or milkshakes. For full tray choices and every shake flavor, ordering at the store is still the reliable way.
Does Cook Out Deliver?
Cook Out does not run its own delivery, but you can get Cook Out delivered through Uber Eats at many stores, during the hours the app lists. Availability depends on your address and the store, so check the app for your location.
Uber Eats is the app where we found Cook Out store listings in October 2026, in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, including stores in Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, Mebane, Monroe, Statesville, Conover, Florence, Anderson and Greeneville. Some are named “Cook Out”, others “Cookout” or “Cook-Out”, so search all three spellings.
| Uber Eats listing (checked Oct 2026) | Hours shown in the app |
|---|---|
| 2411 Battleground Ave, Greensboro | 11:00 AM – 9:30 PM |
| 6505 Falls of Neuse Rd, Raleigh | 11:00 AM – 9:30 PM |
| 3119 Shannon Rd, Durham | 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM |
Two things stand out. First, app hours can end hours before the store closes, so a 1 AM delivery craving often means driving to the window. Second, app prices are set per listing and you also pay delivery and service fees, so the same order usually costs more than at the window.
Who delivers Cook Out?
Cook Out itself does not. Delivery is done by the app’s drivers, so missing items, late orders and refunds go to the app’s support first. Contact the store only if the food itself was made wrong.
For fees, delivery times and tips for app orders, read our full Cook Out delivery guide.
Can You Order Cook Out on DoorDash?
Usually not. Every DoorDash listing for Cook Out we checked in October 2026, in Durham, Greensboro and Charlotte, North Carolina, and Marietta, Georgia, said “Cook Out – C&D is not active” and “This restaurant you are trying to reach is not available on DoorDash right now.” Availability can change, so if DoorDash is your app, search your own address before you give up.
Why is Cook Out not on DoorDash?
Neither Cook Out nor DoorDash has published a reason, and Cook Out rarely talks to the press. What the listings themselves show:
- The Marietta listing states “Store is unaffiliated with DoorDash.”
- The North Carolina listings say “Menu prices for this store are estimated.”
- The listings show hours such as 10:30 AM to 3:40 AM, but none were taking orders when we checked.
So the honest answer to “does Cook Out do DoorDash?” is: not at the listings we could check, and Cook Out has not announced any partnership with DoorDash. If a Cook Out does show up as orderable on DoorDash for your address, it is store- and time-dependent, and prices may differ from the window.
What to use instead
- Check Uber Eats for your address; it is where active Cook Out listings turned up.
- Order at the drive-thru or walk-up window and bring it home yourself; it is cheaper and the full menu is available.
- Use our locations finder to see which store is closest.
How Do You Order a Cookout Tray Step by Step?
To order a Cookout Tray, say “Tray,” name your entree and its style, pick two sides, then pick your drink. A tray costs about $7.39 to $7.99, a Jr. Tray starts around $5.29, and you can usually swap the drink for a milkshake for an extra charge.

The tray in five steps
- 1. Start with “Tray” (or “Jr. Tray”) so the crew bundles the meal at the tray price.
- 2. Choose the entree: for example a Big Double or Regular burger, BBQ sandwich, char-grilled or spicy chicken sandwich, chicken strips, a quesadilla or two hot dogs. Entree lists vary by store.
- 3. Choose the style: burgers come in Everything, Cook Out Style, Out West, Steak and Cheddar; chicken sandwiches in Original, Barbeque, Cajun, Club and Cheddar.
- 4. Choose two sides: fries, onion rings, hushpuppies, chicken nuggets, cheese bites, Cook Out Rounds, slaw, chili, a corn dog, a quesadilla or a wrap side. Doubling one side is fine.
- 5. Choose the drink: published tray menus list a large fountain drink, a Huge tea, Dasani water, Cheerwine or a Coke Float, or ask to swap in a milkshake.
Burger styles in one line each
Cook Out Style is the Carolina classic: chili, slaw, mustard and onions. Cheddar Style adds cheese, and Everything, Out West and Steak are the other three styles on Cook Out’s nutrition sheet. Style upcharges, where a store charges one, vary by location. See what goes on each in our burger styles guide, or read about the Big Double.
The milkshake swap
Many stores let you replace the tray drink with one of 40+ milkshake flavors for an upcharge. The extra cost varies by store, so ask at the speaker. A milkshake on its own runs about $3.99; browse flavors on our milkshake menu.
For full side and entree options, see the Cook Out tray menu, the sides menu and the kids menu and Jr. Tray guide. To total the calories of a tray, try the calorie calculator.
What Do You Say at the Cook Out Window?
Say the word “tray,” then entree and style, two sides and a drink, one tray at a time. For example: “Can I get a tray, Regular burger Cheddar Style, onion rings and fries, large sweet tea.” Short, ordered sentences are easiest to hear through a busy speaker.
A first-timer script
- You: “Hi, it’s my first time. I’d like two trays and a shake.”
- You: “Tray one: Big Double, Cook Out Style. Sides are hushpuppies and onion rings. Drink is a Cheerwine.”
- You: “Tray two: chicken strips. Sides are fries and cheese bites. Swap the drink for a banana pudding milkshake, please.”
- You: “And one extra side of fries. That’s all.”
- Crew: reads the order back and gives a total; confirm or correct it.
- At the window: pay, check the bag, ask for sauces or extra napkins.
Phrases that help
| Say this | What it does |
|---|---|
| “Tray” or “Jr. Tray” | Bundles entree, two sides and a drink at the tray price |
| “Cook Out Style” | Chili, slaw, mustard and onions on a burger or hot dog |
| “Swap the drink for a shake” | Replaces the tray drink with a milkshake, usually for extra |
| “Slaw on the side” | Keeps the bun from getting soggy on a long drive |
| “No onions” / “plain” | Removes a topping or style |
| “Two of those” | Repeats the last tray exactly |

How Do You Pay at Cook Out?
Cook Out takes cash and credit and debit cards at the window. Cook Out’s own company timeline marks 2004 as the year it started accepting cards. On delivery apps you pay in the app instead.
- Cash: accepted at every window. Small bills make late-night lines move faster.
- Credit and debit cards: accepted at the window.
- Apple Pay, Google Pay and tap-to-pay: not confirmed. Cook Out has not published a mobile wallet policy and reports conflict, so ask at your store and carry a backup card.
- Gift cards: Cook Out’s website has no gift card page or balance checker; see our gift cards guide for what we found.
- Rewards and coupons: Cook Out has no rewards program or app. The low tray price is the deal; app promotions apply only inside the app.
If something is wrong with an order you already paid for, go back to the window or call the store first. Cook Out’s customer service line, 1-866-547-0011, is for feedback about a visit, not for placing orders.
When Is the Best Time to Order at Cook Out?
Mid-afternoon, between the lunch rush and dinner, tends to be a quieter time to order at Cook Out, while lunch and the late-night weekend rush, roughly 11 PM to 2 AM, are typically the busiest. Most stores open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and 4 AM Friday and Saturday, but hours vary by store.
Typical hours: 10:30 AM to about 3 AM Sunday–Thursday and 10:30 AM to about 4 AM Friday–Saturday. App hours are often shorter. Holidays can mean shorter hours or a closure, so check your store.
- Ordering for a group? Write the trays down before you reach the speaker, and consider the walk-up window so one person can check every bag.
- Driving far? Ask for slaw on the side and eat the fries first; hushpuppies and onion rings travel better.
- Late at night? Some stores run low on popular sides or shake flavors near close, so have a backup choice.
- Travelling? Cook Out has about 370 stores in 11 states, from North Carolina, with 144 stores, to Maryland, with one. See every state on our Cook Out locations page.

To order ahead, use a third-party app such as Uber Eats where your store is listed, or order at the drive-thru or walk-up window.
Can you order Cook Out online?
Only through third-party apps. Cook Out’s own website has no order button. Why is Cook Out not on DoorDash?
Neither company has given a public reason. DoorDash listings for Cook Out we checked in October 2026, in Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte and Marietta, all said the restaurant was not active and not available on DoorDash right now. The Marietta listing said the store is unaffiliated with DoorDash. Check the app for your address in case that changes.
Does Cook Out have indoor seating?
Most Cook Outs do not; the standard store has two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window. Some stores have dining rooms with counter service, starting with High Point, NC, in 1996, and including the Jacksonville, FL Beach Blvd store that opened in July 2026. Dining rooms can close earlier than the drive-thru, so check your store.
How do you order a Cookout Tray?
Say “tray,” then your entree and style, two sides and a drink, for example “Tray, Big Double Cook Out Style, fries and hushpuppies, Cheerwine.” A tray costs about $7.39 to $7.99 and a Jr. Tray starts around $5.29.
