Getting There

How Do I Get to Cook Out Lebanon From I-40?

Take I-40 to exit 238 (US-231, South Cumberland Street) and turn north toward Lebanon; Legends Drive is on the northeast side of the interchange, about half a mile from the ramp. That makes the Lebanon store one of the easiest Cook Out stops on I-40 between Nashville and Knoxville.

Lebanon has three I-40 exits. US-231 is the main north–south road through the city, running from Murfreesboro in the south through downtown Lebanon and north toward Hartsville and the Kentucky line. US-70 runs east–west through Lebanon toward Nashville and Smithville, SR-109 passes west of the city toward Gallatin, and I-840 begins just west of Lebanon and loops south around Nashville toward Murfreesboro.

Coming from each direction

  • From Nashville or Mt. Juliet (I-40 east): take exit 238 and follow US-231 north a short way to Legends Dr.
  • From Cookeville or Knoxville (I-40 west): take exit 238 and head north on US-231; Legends Dr is just past the interchange.
  • From Murfreesboro (US-231 north): US-231 runs straight up to exit 238; continue north past the interstate to Legends Dr.
  • From downtown Lebanon or Cumberland University: head south on South Cumberland Street (US-231) toward the interstate.
  • From Gallatin or Hartsville: SR-109 south or US-231 south bring you toward Lebanon; continue to the I-40 interchange.

Exit 238 is also where many travelers stop for fuel, so the interchange can be busy on holiday weekends. If you only need a quick tray, the drive-thru on Legends Drive keeps you close to the on-ramps.

Local Market

What Is the Cook Out Market Like in Lebanon and Wilson County?

Lebanon is a one-store Cook Out market: a county seat of about 38,400 people (2020 census) with the only Cook Out in Wilson County. That makes Legends Drive the default late-night stop for Lebanon, Watertown and much of the I-40 corridor east of Nashville.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina. The chain later expands into Tennessee, where Cook Out’s locator now lists 40 open stores.

Today: 107 Legends Dr is the only Cook Out in Wilson County. Local reporting on Middle Tennessee’s Cook Out growth lists it among about a dozen existing stores in the region.

Coming soon: Cook Out’s locator lists 5002 Old Hickory Blvd in Hermitage (about 18 miles west), 5321 Hickory Hollow Ln in Antioch (about 22 miles) and 10 Harding Mall Dr in Nashville (about 25 miles) as coming soon. No opening dates have been announced.

We have not found a reliable public record of when the Lebanon store opened, so this guide does not give one. Lebanon itself has a strong restaurant identity: Cracker Barrel was founded here by Dan Evins in 1969 and still has its corporate headquarters in the city. Cook Out fills a different niche, serving cheap trays and milkshakes into the early morning.

Lebanon is part of the Nashville metropolitan area, and the WeGo Star commuter rail line ends here, linking the city with downtown Nashville. For every Tennessee store, see the Cook Out Tennessee guide.
