Quick Answer

Does Cook Out Have Hushpuppies?

Yes. Hushpuppies are a standard Cook Out side, sold as a full order and as a tray-side portion that counts as one of the two sides in a Cookout Tray. Cook Out’s nutrition sheet lists the full order at 170.2 g and 600 calories and the tray side at 85.1 g and 300 calories.

Cook Out’s menu listing on SinglePlatform describes the order as “1 dozen home made,” and the hushpuppies have a reputation of their own: in June 2026, Eat This, Not That! listed Cook Out first in a diner-driven roundup of restaurant chains with the best hushpuppies, calling them a favorite at the inexpensive chain. In January 2026, the same outlet included Cook Out in a chef-picked list, where chef Andrew Owens praised their “super crispy edges” and “a touch of sweetness.”

They are available across the roughly 370 Cook Out restaurants in 11 states on Cook Out’s store locator in October 2026. Cook Out was founded in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by Morris Reaves, so a cornmeal fritter that grew up at Carolina fish fries and barbecue joints fits the menu naturally. Most stores open at about 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and 4 AM on Friday and Saturday; hours vary, so check the Cook Out hours guide.

  • Full order: 600 calories, 93 g carbs, 21 g sugar, 1,440 mg sodium, 3 g protein.
  • Tray side: 300 calories, 47 g carbs, 11 g sugar, 720 mg sodium, 2 g protein.
  • Ratio: the tray side is exactly half of a full order by weight and calories.
Official Nutrition

How Many Calories Are in Cook Out Hushpuppies?

A full order of Cook Out hushpuppies has 600 calories and a tray side has 300 calories, according to Cook Out’s published nutrition sheet. The tray side is exactly half the full order by weight (85.1 g vs 170.2 g) and calories.

PortionServingCaloriesFatSat. fatTrans fatCholesterolSodiumCarbsFiberSugarProtein
Full order170.2 g60018 g5 g0 g30 mg1,440 mg93 g9 g21 g3 g
Tray side85.1 g3009 g2 g0 g15 mg720 mg47 g5 g11 g2 g

If an order is the dozen described in Cook Out’s menu listing, each hushpuppy averages about 14 g and 50 calories (170.2 g and 600 calories divided by 12). Treat that as an estimate: Cook Out publishes weight, not a piece count, and handmade fritters vary in size.

How much of your day is that?

Against the FDA Daily Values used on U.S. nutrition labels (78 g fat, 20 g saturated fat, 300 mg cholesterol, 2,300 mg sodium, 275 g carbohydrate, 28 g fiber, 50 g protein):

NutrientFull order% Daily ValueTray side% Daily Value
Total fat18 g23%9 g12%

Cholesterol30 mg10%15 mg5%
Sodium1,440 mg63%720 mg31%
Carbohydrates93 g34%47 g17%
Dietary fiber9 g32%5 g18%
Protein3 g6%2 g4%

Two numbers stand out. Sodium: a full order carries 1,440 mg, 63% of the Daily Value, and even the tray side is nearly a third of a day. Fiber: a full order has 9 g (32% of the Daily Value), which is unusual for a fried side and comes from the cornmeal. The 21 g of sugar in a full order (11 g per tray side) is why Cook Out’s hushpuppies taste noticeably sweet.

Nutrition Math

Why Are Hushpuppies One of Cook Out’s Heaviest Sides?

Hushpuppies are dense: about 3.5 calories per gram, nearly twice the onion rings (1.86) and about 20% more than the nuggets (2.94). A tray side of hushpuppies weighs only 85 g but carries 300 calories, mostly from carbohydrate.

Run the label arithmetic (4 calories per gram of carbohydrate or protein, 9 per gram of fat) on the tray side: 47 g of carbohydrate supplies about 188 calories, 9 g of fat about 81, and 2 g of protein about 8. So roughly 60% of the calories come from carbohydrate and a bit over a quarter from fat, the opposite of the nuggets, where fat dominates. That makes sense for a fritter built on cornmeal batter rather than on meat.

  • Protein is minimal: 2 g per tray side, or about 0.7 g per 100 calories; only the side of slaw (0 g) is lower among the sides compared below.
  • Sodium per calorie is mid-pack: 240 mg per 100 calories, similar to onion rings (256 mg) and Cook Out Rounds (250 mg) and far below the side of chili (559 mg).
  • Fiber is a bright spot: 5 g per tray side is more than any other side portion in the table below.
  • Sugar adds up: 11 g per tray side. Add a regular sweet tea (74 g of sugar on Cook Out’s sheet) and the tray’s sugar climbs quickly.

Compared with the full-order math: two tray sides are identical to one full order (600 calories, 1,440 mg sodium), so picking hushpuppies for both tray sides gets you a full order’s worth inside the tray price, if your store allows a double side.

Southern Food History

What Is a Hushpuppy and Where Did It Come From?

A hushpuppy is a deep-fried ball of seasoned cornmeal batter, a Southern side most closely tied to fish fries and barbecue in the Carolinas. Its exact origin is unproven, and the most famous stories behind the name are legends.

The legends: The best-known tale says cooks tossed scraps of fried batter to hungry or howling dogs with the words “hush, puppy!” Other versions credit Confederate soldiers quieting their dogs, Ursuline nuns in New Orleans, or a Florida fishing village. Food historians treat all of these as folklore rather than documented history.

Red horse bread: The earliest well-documented predecessor is “red horse bread,” a cornmeal fritter served by Romeo Govan, a formerly enslaved man who hosted fish fries on the Edisto River in South Carolina, alongside fried redhorse fish. After Govan’s death in 1915, the fritter spread to fish fries across South Carolina.

1930s: Hushpuppies became widely popular in the mid-1930s as car travel brought vacationers to Southeastern coasts and their big fish fries.

1938: The Sanitary Fish Market opened in Morehead City, North Carolina, and became known for its hushpuppies.

1948: By this year “hushpuppy” had become the most common name for fried cornmeal dough, and Walter Thompson of Swansboro, North Carolina, released Thompson’s Fireside Hushpuppy Mix, helping spread hushpuppies beyond the South. The mix later passed to House-Autry Mills of Four Oaks, North Carolina, which still sells hushpuppy mix.

Today hushpuppies are a fixture of North Carolina barbecue restaurants and seafood houses, which is why a drive-thru chain founded in Greensboro serves them next to burgers and chopped-pork BBQ sandwiches. Recipes vary widely, from plain cornmeal and buttermilk to versions with onion or sugar; Cook Out’s 21 g of sugar per full order puts its version on the sweeter side.

Ordering Guide

How Do You Order Hushpuppies at Cook Out?

Order a Cookout Tray and name hushpuppies as one of your two sides, or ask for a full order on its own. On a tray they are included in the price; a full order is priced on each store’s menu board.

A Cookout Tray is one entree, two sides and a drink. At the speaker the usual order is tray, entree, style, first side, second side, drink, for example: “Cookout Tray, BBQ sandwich, hushpuppies and slaw, regular sweet tea.” Cook Out moves fast, so having your sides ready keeps the line moving.

First-timer tip: A tray side is half a full order (85.1 g vs 170.2 g). If you love hushpuppies, ask whether your store will let you choose them for both tray sides; that adds up to a full order’s weight inside the tray.
  • Cookout Tray (entree + 2 sides + drink): about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Full order of hushpuppies: priced by each store, posted on the menu board
  • Milkshake in place of the tray drink: extra charge that varies by store

Tips for the best hushpuppies

  • Eat them hot. The crisp crust that diners praise softens as the fritters cool in a closed bag.
  • Share a full order. At 600 calories and 1,440 mg of sodium, a full order splits well between two people.
  • Go before closing time. Fryers can be shut down for cleaning near close, and sides can run out late at night.
  • Order delivery only if you are close. Fried sides lose texture on long rides; see the delivery guide.

What Are the Best Cook Out Trays With Hushpuppies?

The lightest hushpuppy tray here is a char-grilled chicken sandwich with hushpuppies, onion rings and unsweet tea at 805 calories; the heaviest is the barbecue-joint trio of BBQ sandwich, hushpuppies, slaw and sweet tea at 1,309 calories. Each total adds Cook Out’s official figures for every item.

Entree figures are the items as listed on Cook Out’s nutrition sheet; the Big Double total adds the Cook Out Style toppings (chili, slaw, mustard and onions) at 123 calories. Drinks are regular 16 oz fountain sizes. The side of slaw is used at its published 405 calories, which is high for coleslaw, so the BBQ tray total may overstate the real figure.

  • Your drink is the biggest lever. Regular sweet tea adds 236 calories and regular Cheerwine 144; unsweet tea, Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar add none. See the drinks menu.
  • Pair hushpuppies with protein. Because hushpuppies bring only 2 g of protein, a chicken entree or a nugget side balances the tray: the protein-balance build reaches 37 g.
  • Sodium stacks fast. Every build here except the two chicken-sandwich trays passes 1,900 mg, and the strips tray reaches 3,777 mg because three strips (2,130 mg) and chili (917 mg) are both salty.
  • Swapping hushpuppies for onion rings saves 172 calories per tray side (300 vs 128); see the onion rings guide.

How Do Hushpuppies Compare With Other Cook Out Sides?

Hushpuppies are among the most filling Cook Out sides at 300 calories per tray side, roughly double or more the onion rings, nuggets, Cook Out Rounds or cheese bites. They lead the group on fiber but trail it on protein.

All values are the tray-side or single-item portions from Cook Out’s nutrition sheet. The side of slaw is shown as published (405 calories, high for coleslaw), and regular fries are included for reference at the regular-size portion Cook Out lists.

  • Hushpuppies vs onion rings: 300 vs 128 calories and 47 g vs 28 g of carbohydrate. Rings are the lighter fried side by a wide margin.
  • Hushpuppies vs nuggets: 300 vs 144 calories, 2 g vs 10 g of protein. Nuggets are the protein pick; hushpuppies are the comfort pick.
  • Hushpuppies vs cheese bites: both run about 3.5 calories per gram, but cheese bites come in a 42.5 g tray portion (150 calories) against 85.1 g for hushpuppies.
  • Hushpuppies vs regular fries: fries have more calories (347) in a larger 119.8 g portion, with 4 g of fiber to the hushpuppies’ 5 g.

Outside Cook Out, hushpuppies are a standard side at seafood and Southern chains; Eat This, Not That!’s 2026 hushpuppy rankings also named Captain D’s, Red Lobster, Long John Silver’s and Cracker Barrel. Few burger drive-thrus serve them at all, which is part of what makes Cook Out’s tray unusual.

Diet & Allergens

Are Cook Out Hushpuppies Vegetarian, Gluten-Free or Low-Carb?

Hushpuppies contain no meat in a typical recipe, but they are high in carbohydrates (47 g per tray side) and should not be assumed gluten-free or vegan. Cook Out does not publish an ingredient list or allergen statement for its hushpuppies on its nutrition sheet.

  • Low-carb and keto: not a fit. A tray side has 47 g of carbohydrate and a full order 93 g, more than a third of the 275 g Daily Value.
  • Gluten and wheat: many hushpuppy recipes mix wheat flour into the cornmeal, and fried sides usually share fryer oil. If you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy, ask the manager and see our Cook Out allergen guide.
  • Egg and milk: traditional hushpuppy batters often include egg and buttermilk or milk. Cook Out’s sheet lists 15 mg of cholesterol per tray side, which suggests an animal-derived ingredient, so vegans should ask before ordering. Our vegan menu guide covers plant-based picks.
  • Vegetarian: generally treated as a meatless side, though shared fryers may cook chicken and other items.
  • Sodium-conscious: 720 mg per tray side is 31% of the Daily Value; choose one hushpuppy side rather than two.
  • Blood sugar: 47 g of carbohydrate including 11 g of sugar per tray side; pairing it with protein and a zero-sugar drink is the gentler option.

Handmade fritters vary, so counts can differ slightly by store.

Ask the store manager and see our allergen guide before ordering.

Where did the name hushpuppy come from?

No one knows for sure. The popular legend says cooks tossed fried batter to barking dogs saying “hush, puppy,” but that story is unproven. The best-documented predecessor is “red horse bread,” served at South Carolina fish fries by Romeo Govan, and by 1948 “hushpuppy” had become the most common name.
