Tri-Cities History

When Did Cook Out Come to Kingsport and the Tri-Cities?

Cook Out entered Tennessee through the Tri-Cities: a Middle Tennessee news report notes that the company opened its first Tennessee store in Johnson City in 2010. We could not confirm a published opening date for the Kingsport store on East Stone Drive, so we do not list one here.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina.

2010: Cook Out opens its first Tennessee restaurant, in Johnson City, about 19 miles south of Kingsport.

Since then: Stores open across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, including Kingsport, both Bristols, Elizabethton and Greeneville; exact opening dates for most of them were not widely reported.

2022: WJHL reports that a Cook Out is planned on North Lincoln in Jonesborough, at US 11E and Boone Street, giving Washington County a second store.

Today: Cook Out’s locator lists 40 open Tennessee stores as of October 2026, with Kingsport still served by a single store on East Stone Drive.

The Tri-Cities is a natural fit for a North Carolina drive-thru chain: the region sits right on the Tennessee–Virginia line and close to western North Carolina, where Cook Out has been a late-night habit for decades. For the full statewide picture, see our Cook Out Tennessee guide.

Coming from each direction

  • From Johnson City on I-26 west: stay on I-26 past the I-81 interchange (exit 8) and take exit 4 for Wilcox Drive, or ride to the end at exit 1 and follow Stone Drive east.
  • From Knoxville on I-81 north: leave I-81 for I-26 west toward Kingsport, then use exit 4 or exit 1. Knoxville is roughly 90 miles away; see our Knoxville guide for stores along the way.
  • From Bristol: US 11W runs west from Bristol through Blountville and becomes Stone Drive in Kingsport, bringing you straight to the store’s side of town.
  • From Gate City or Weber City, VA on US 23 south: US 23 crosses the state line and reaches Stone Drive at the I-26 exit 1 interchange; turn east on Stone Drive.
  • From Asheville on I-26 west: follow I-26 through Johnson City to Kingsport, about 100 miles in total; see our Asheville guide for North Carolina stops on the way.

A note on exit numbers: I-26’s mileposts start at zero on the centerline of US 11W in Kingsport, so Kingsport’s exits carry the lowest numbers on the whole interstate. The I-26 shield at Stone Drive is literally the end of the line.

Late-Night Food

Is the Kingsport Cook Out Near Eastman, Holston Valley or Fort Henry Mall?

Yes, all three are a short drive across Kingsport: Eastman’s headquarters on South Wilcox Drive and Holston Valley Medical Center on West Ravine Road are a few miles west and southwest of the store, and Fort Henry Mall is on the east side off Fort Henry Drive. With late hours, the store is a common stop for plant shift workers, hospital staff and shoppers.

EastmanThe specialty-materials company is headquartered at 200 South Wilcox Drive in Kingsport. Wilcox Drive (SR 126) links the Eastman area with I-26 exit 4 and with Stone Drive.

Holston Valley Medical CenterThe hospital at 130 West Ravine Road is close to downtown Kingsport. Night-shift staff can reach East Stone Drive in a few minutes after the late rush.

Fort Henry MallOpened in 1976 at Fort Henry Drive and Memorial Boulevard, the mall was known for years as Kingsport Town Center before the Fort Henry Mall name returned in 2017.

Downtown KingsportBroad Street and Church Circle sit about 2.3 miles west of the store in a straight line, close enough for an after-event run.

MeadowViewThe conference center and resort area at I-26 exit 3 is on the south side of town, with Wilcox Drive the usual link north toward Stone Drive.

Warriors’ Path State ParkThe lakeside park on Fort Patrick Henry Lake lies southeast of the city, a reasonable drive for a tray to take back to a campsite.

Cook Out is built around the drive-thru and walk-up window rather than an indoor dining room, so plan to eat in the car or take it home. Ordering several trays for a shift crew is usually faster if one person calls out the whole order at the speaker.

Ordering tips for Kingsport: the drive-thru moves fastest if you order by tray (for example, “a Big Double tray, Cook Out Style, with hush puppies and onion rings, sweet tea to drink”). Shakes take longer to make, so order them with the meal rather than adding them at the window. Feeding a crew after a shift? Several trays usually cost less than combo meals at the other chains along Stone Drive.

Local Comparison

How Does Cook Out Compare to Pal’s and Kingsport’s Other Late-Night Options?

Cook Out’s edge in Kingsport is a full tray with two sides for under $8 and a drive-thru open until about 3 or 4 AM; Pal’s Sudden Service, born in Kingsport, wins on hometown loyalty and speed.

Kingsport has its own fast-food legend. Fred “Pal” Barger opened the first Pal’s in Kingsport in 1956, and the chain is still headquartered in the city. In 2001 Pal’s became the first restaurant company to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and its drive-thrus are a fixture across the Tri-Cities. Cook Out competes differently: a broader menu with barbecue, wraps and quesadillas, milkshakes in more than 40 flavors, and hours that run long after most local kitchens close.
