Conway was also where Cook Out first arrived in Horry County. 1. Cook Out in Conway — 2 Cook Out locations

Think of Conway’s two stores as bookends on US-501. The Church Street store serves the historic town on the west bank of the Waccamaw River, where US-501 runs through Conway as Church Street. The US-501 store serves the fast-growing corridor east of the river, where the highway widens toward Myrtle Beach and passes Coastal Carolina University, Conway Medical Center and the hotels that cluster around the campus.

2. Nearby Cook Out Locations on the Grand Strand — 4 Cook Out locations

Beyond Conway, the nearest Cook Outs are all on the Grand Strand, 11 to 20 miles east. US-501 leads straight to the Carolina Forest and central Myrtle Beach stores, SC-544 heads toward the South Strand, and SC-22 (the Conway Bypass) is the quickest way north toward North Myrtle Beach. If you are coming the other way, Mullins (105 Market St., about 31 miles northwest) is the next store inland.

Which Cook Out Is Closest to My Part of Conway?

If you are west of the Waccamaw River, use Church St; if you are east of it, near Coastal Carolina or on the way to the beach, use US-501. The two stores are about 6 miles apart, so picking the right one can save you 10 minutes or more at rush hour.

Because Church Street carries US-501 traffic through town, it is the natural stop when you are driving in from Marion or Florence on US-501 and want to eat before the beach traffic starts. Students and anyone staying at the hotels around Coastal Carolina will find the US-501 store faster, since it is on their side of the river and does not involve crossing downtown.

Road Guide

How Do I Get to Cook Out From US-501, SC-544 or SC-22?

Both Conway stores are on US-501, the main highway between Florence and Myrtle Beach. Inside the city limits US-501 runs as Church Street; east of the Waccamaw River it becomes the wide divided highway that leads past Coastal Carolina University toward Myrtle Beach.

Conway’s road network can confuse first-time visitors because there are two versions of US-501. The main route follows Church Street around the west and north side of the historic district, while US-501 Business follows Main Street through downtown and crosses the Waccamaw River on the Main Street bridge toward Red Hill, where it meets the main highway again. US-701 runs north–south through town toward Loris and Georgetown, US-378 comes in from Lake City and the west, and SC-544 runs from the Coastal Carolina area southeast toward Socastee and Surfside Beach.

Coming from each direction

  • From Florence, Marion or Aynor (US-501 southeast): follow US-501 into Conway, where it becomes Church Street. The Church St store is on that route, so you reach it before you get to the river.
  • From Myrtle Beach or Carolina Forest (US-501 northwest): head inland on US-501. The 2480 US Hwy 501 store is on the highway near Coastal Carolina University, well before the river and downtown.
  • From Surfside Beach or Socastee (SC-544 northwest): SC-544 ends at US-501 Business in Red Hill, on the Coastal Carolina side of the river, a short hop from the US-501 store.
  • From North Myrtle Beach or Little River (SC-22): SC-22, the Conway Bypass, links US-17 north of Myrtle Beach with US-501 on the northwest side of Conway. Follow it west, then take US-501 southeast into town, where Church Street and the Church St store come first.
  • From Loris or Georgetown (US-701): US-701 brings you right into the heart of Conway; Church Street is a few blocks away.

Summer weekends change everything. Saturday check-in traffic for the beach can back up US-501 between Conway and Myrtle Beach, so if you are heading home westbound on a busy Saturday, the Church St store may be the calmer choice. On weekday evenings, the US-501 store gets the after-class rush from Coastal Carolina.

Horry County History

When Did Cook Out Come to Conway and the Grand Strand?

Conway was Horry County’s first Cook Out market: local news reports place the county’s first store in Conway in 2013, near Coastal Carolina University. The chain then spread toward the coast, and today Conway is one of four Horry County communities with a store.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina. The chain grows across the Carolinas and later the wider Southeast.

2013 (construction): My Horry News reports that Horry County’s first Cook Out is under construction on the US-501 corridor, just north of Burning Ridge Drive, permitted for about 3,590 square feet with two drive-thru windows and a 42-flavor milkshake menu.

2013: The Conway store opens near Coastal Carolina University, according to a later My Horry News report. A Myrtle Beach store follows months later in a former Burger King on Kings Highway.

2015: Plans are reported for a third Grand Strand store in the Queens Harbor area off the US-17 Bypass between Myrtle Beach and Surfside, and a fourth is discussed for Carolina Forest.

Today: Cook Out’s locator lists 52 open South Carolina stores as of October 2026, including both Conway locations at 2480 US Hwy 501 and 1629 Church St.

We have not found a reliable public record of the date the Church Street store opened, so this guide does not give one. What is clear is that Conway now has a store on each side of the Waccamaw River, which few towns of its size can say. That reflects how much Conway has grown as the Horry County seat, a university town and a bedroom community for the beach economy.

For a wider view of the state, the Cook Out South Carolina guide lists all 52 stores by region, from the Upstate to the Lowcountry.

Late-Night Food

Is There a Cook Out Near Coastal Carolina University?

Yes. The Conway – US-501 store at 2480 US Hwy 501 is about a mile from the Coastal Carolina University campus, making it the default late-night stop for Chanticleers students, staff and game-day visitors. Hotel listings put the Comfort Suites at the same US-501 address about 1.3 miles from campus.

Coastal Carolina UniversityThe campus at 100 Chanticleer Dr E sits just off US-501. After evening classes or a late study session at the library, the US-501 drive-thru is the quickest full meal still open past midnight.

Brooks Stadium & game daysOn football Saturdays, CCU fans stream back onto US-501 after the game. Expect a line, and consider the Church St store if you are heading into town instead of toward the beach.

Conway Medical CenterThe hospital at 300 Singleton Ridge Rd is just off US-501 on the same side of town as the US-501 store. Night-shift staff and visitors can reach the drive-thru in a few minutes.

Downtown & the RiverwalkThe Conway Riverwalk, Main Street shops and Horry County offices are on the west side of the river, closer to 1629 Church St.

If you are visiting a student, it helps to know that the hotels along US-501 near campus, including the Econo Lodge at 2376 US 501 East, are on the same stretch as the store. That makes it easy to grab a late tray without fighting beach traffic.

Local Comparison

How Does Cook Out Compare to Other Fast Food in Conway?

Cook Out’s edge in Conway is late hours and a full tray for under $8; most of the chains along Church Street and US-501 close well before 3 AM. That is why the drive-thru lines stay steady long after the dinner rush.

Church Street has become one of Conway’s busiest restaurant corridors; in late 2024, for example, Slim Chickens and Firehouse Subs were announced for a shared building at 2197 Church St. The US-501 side near Coastal Carolina has its own cluster of burger, chicken and pizza chains aimed at students. Cook Out competes on three things: price, menu range and hours.
