Home State Story

When and Where Did Cook Out Start in North Carolina?

Cook Out was founded in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by Morris Reaves, and the first restaurant opened on Randleman Road. The company is still family-owned and headquartered in Thomasville, NC, in Davidson County.

1989: The first Cook Out opens on Randleman Road in Greensboro, built around char-grilled burgers, North Carolina-style chopped barbecue and a long list of thick milkshakes.

Early growth: The chain spreads across the Piedmont and into eastern and western North Carolina. More than 50 NC stores were open before Cook Out expanded into other states.

Out-of-state expansion: Cook Out moves into Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and beyond and now has open stores in 11 states. North Carolina is still the core market and keeps adding stores in smaller towns.

2024–2026: Cook Out announced a Charlotte expansion in August 2024. The city now has 13 open stores, including Charlottetowne Ave near uptown, and Woodland Beaver Rd in east Charlotte is listed as coming soon. Small eastern towns such as Tarboro also have their own stores now.

That long head start explains why Cook Out is part of everyday life in North Carolina. Almost every county seat of any size has a store, and in many small towns the Cook Out drive-thru is the busiest place open after midnight.

Highway Guide

Which North Carolina Interstates Have Cook Out Near the Exit?

I-85, I-40 and I-95 have the most Cook Out stores close to an exit in North Carolina, and I-77 has several in the Lake Norman area. The table shows which towns each highway passes and which stores sit right by an interchange.

US 70Garner, Clayton, Selma, Goldsboro, Kinston, New Bern, Havelock, Morehead City; also Hickory and MarionArendell St, Berkeley Blvd area

On I-95, Fayetteville’s four stores are a few miles off the interstate, so southbound drivers who want a store right at the exit should plan on Dunn or Lumberton. On the coast, US 17 between Jacksonville and Wilmington has no Cook Out until you reach Wilmington’s Market St store. The Richlands store listed as coming soon will help on the Jacksonville side once it opens.

Most highway stores are double drive-thru restaurants with no indoor dining room, so they are quick in and out with a car or truck. Big rigs are better off at stores on wide commercial roads like Dixie Dr in Asheboro or Julian R. Allsbrook Hwy in Roanoke Rapids than at tight in-town lots.

Late-Night Hours

What Time Does Cook Out Close in North Carolina?

Most North Carolina Cook Out stores open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and about 4 AM on Friday and Saturday. Hours vary by store, and some small-town or campus-area locations keep different schedules, so check the store before a late drive.

DayTypical openTypical close
Sunday–Thursday10:30 AMabout 3:00 AM
Friday–Saturday10:30 AMabout 4:00 AM
Major holidaysVariesMay close early or stay closed

Late-night service is usually drive-thru only, and the walk-up window may close earlier at some stores. Thanksgiving and Christmas hours are not always the same as the standard schedule, so see our Cook Out hours guide before you count on a holiday meal.

For a 2 AM run, the in-town city stores (Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville and Wilmington) are the safest bets because they have the most late traffic. In smaller towns, the Cook Out drive-thru is often one of the only kitchens still open after midnight.

Ordering Guide

What Does Cook Out Cost in North Carolina (2026)?

A Cookout Tray (an entree, two sides and a drink) costs about $7.39–$7.99 at most North Carolina stores, and a Jr. Tray starts at about $5.29. Prices are set store by store, so expect small differences between Charlotte, the Triangle and rural towns.

First-timer tip: Order a Big Double “Cook Out Style” tray (chili, slaw, onions and mustard) with hush puppies and a Cheerwine or sweet tea, then add a milkshake. In North Carolina, a BBQ tray or a BBQ sandwich with slaw is the other classic order.
  • Cookout Tray: about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Milkshakes: about $3.99, 40+ flavors
  • Payment: cash and cards accepted

Tray entrees include burgers, the Big Double, chopped NC barbecue, hot dogs, chicken strips, spicy chicken, chicken wraps and quesadillas. For sides you can pick fries, onion rings, hush puppies, chili cheese fries, slaw, bacon wrap and more. Cheerwine, the cherry soda bottled in Salisbury, NC, is on the fountain at most stores and can also be ordered as a float.

NC Fast-Food Rivals

How Does Cook Out Compare to Other North Carolina Favorites?

Cook Out wins on late hours and tray value. Other North Carolina chains are known for breakfast (Biscuitville), fried chicken and biscuits (Bojangles) or a sit-down char-grill experience. Many locals use Cook Out for late dinner and a milkshake and the others for morning or daytime meals.

ChainNC rootsBest forCompared with Cook Out
BojanglesCharlotte, 1977Chicken and biscuits, breakfastEarlier hours, fewer late-night stores

Krispy KremeWinston-Salem, 1937Doughnuts and coffeeDessert rival to Cook Out shakes

For barbecue, Cook Out’s chopped pork is a quick fast-food take on North Carolina barbecue, not a replacement for the state’s wood-fired pits in Lexington or the whole-hog places down east. It does give travelers a taste of the style at 1 AM, when every pit house has long since closed.
