Local Context

How Does Cook Out Fit Into Burlington and Alamance County?

Burlington is Alamance County’s largest city, and Cook Out covers the county with three stores: Burlington, Graham and Mebane. All three sit close to I-40/85, which runs east to west through the middle of the county.

A Triad chain close to home: Cook Out was founded in 1989 in Greensboro by Morris Reaves, about 20 miles west of Burlington. The chain grew through the Piedmont first, and it now has 144 open North Carolina stores as of October 2026, according to its locator.

Textile town: Burlington grew as a railroad and textile center; Burlington Industries took its name from the city. Today the economy is more mixed, with LabCorp headquartered downtown and retail clustered along Huffman Mill Road and University Drive.

Graham, the county seat: Graham is home to the historic Alamance County Courthouse on Court Square. The Cook Out on South Main Street serves Graham’s downtown, county workers and the neighborhoods south toward I-40/85.

Mebane’s growth: East of Graham, Mebane has grown quickly around Tanger Outlets and new industrial parks, which explains the third Alamance County store on Mebane Oaks Road.

We have not found a reliable public source for the opening dates of the Burlington or Graham stores, so we do not list them. If a listing on another site gives you a different count or address, trust the current Cook Out locator.

Road Trip Guide

Is There a Cook Out Off I-40/85 in Burlington?

Yes. The Huffman Mill Road store is near I-40/85 exit 141, and the Graham store is on South Main Street (NC-87), which meets I-40/85 at exit 147. Both are easy stops for drivers on the shared I-40/85 corridor between Greensboro and Durham.

I-40 and I-85 run together through Alamance County, from the Greensboro area east to Hillsborough, where they split again. That makes Burlington a natural halfway stop between Greensboro and the Triangle, and Cook Out gives you three options along the way.

Coming from each direction

  • Eastbound from Greensboro: exit 141 (Huffman Mill Road) for the Burlington store. If you miss it, exit 147 (NC-87) leads into Graham for the S. Main St store.
  • Westbound from Durham and Hillsborough: exit 154 (Mebane Oaks Road) is your first Cook Out stop, then exit 147 for Graham.
  • US-70 (Church St): US-70 runs through Burlington and Graham parallel to the interstate and is the local alternative when I-40/85 is backed up.
  • NC-87 (from Pittsboro and Siler City): NC-87 comes north into Graham as South Main Street and passes the Graham store.
  • NC-62 and NC-49: these state routes bring traffic from Yanceyville and from Liberty and Asheboro into the Burlington area.

Heading south toward Chatham County? Cook Out’s locator lists a new store at 1513 E 11th Street in Siler City as coming soon. See our Cook Out Siler City guide for updates.

Ordering Guide

What Should I Order at Cook Out in Burlington, and How Much Does It Cost?

The Cookout Tray is the best deal at about $7.39–$7.99: one entrée, two sides and a drink. Make the drink a milkshake for a small upcharge and you still come in under $10 at most stores.

First-timer tip: Get a Big Double “Cook Out Style” (chili, slaw, onions and mustard) as a tray with hushpuppies and Cajun fries, and try a Cheerwine float, the cherry soda made in Salisbury, NC.
  • Cookout Tray (entrée + 2 sides + drink): about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Milkshakes: about $3.99, with 40+ flavors
  • Sides include fries, hushpuppies, onion rings, slaw, chili, cheese bites and more

Popular tray entrées include the Big Double burger, the NC barbecue sandwich, chicken strips, spicy chicken, the Cook Out-style hot dog and the quesadilla. Shake favorites range from banana pudding and peach cobbler to Oreo mint and cheesecake flavors.

Cash and cards are accepted. Prices vary slightly by store and change over time. See our tray menu, milkshake menu and secret menu guides for more ordering ideas.

Local Favorites

How Does Cook Out Compare to Burlington’s Local Favorites?

Cook Out wins on late hours, low prices and milkshake variety; Burlington’s long-running local spots win on history and slow-cooked barbecue. Many locals use both, depending on the time of day.

SpotKnown forWhen to choose it
Cook Out (Huffman Mill Rd, Graham)Trays, burgers, 40+ shakes, late hoursLate night, budget meals, quick drive-thru
Zack’s Hot Dogs (downtown Burlington)Old-school hot dogs, a Burlington institution since the 1920sDaytime lunch downtown
Hursey’s Bar-B-Q (Burlington)Long-running family barbecue restaurantSit-down barbecue plates
Biscuit chains (Bojangles, Hardee’s)Breakfast biscuitsMorning, since Cook Out does not serve breakfast

A Cook Out hot dog “Cook Out Style” with chili, slaw and onions is a close cousin of the classic North Carolina dog you get downtown, at a lower price and much later at night. For a full barbecue plate, though, a dedicated barbecue restaurant is the better call.
