Quick Answer

What Can You Order at Cook Out Late at Night?

You can order the full Cook Out menu late at night: trays, burgers, chicken, hot dogs, quesadillas, sides and milkshakes are all served from opening until close. The only real limits after midnight are items that run out and equipment that gets shut down for cleaning in the last few minutes before closing.

Cook Out is a drive-thru burger chain founded in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by Morris Reaves and headquartered in Thomasville, North Carolina. It has about 370 restaurants in 11 states on its store locator as of October 2026, and its late hours are a big part of its reputation across the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and the Florida Panhandle.

Is Cook Out open late? Yes. Most stores open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and around 4 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, but hours vary by store. Local reporting shows the spread: Clemson’s student paper listed its store at 10:30 AM to 3:30 AM Sunday–Thursday and 4:30 AM on weekends in 2025, while the Tifton, Georgia, store opened in 2019 with a drive-thru that ran until 2 AM Sunday–Thursday and a dining room that closed at 10 or 11 PM. For day-by-day times, holidays and time zones, see the Cook Out hours guide; this page is about what to order once you are in line.

  • Classic late-night order: a Cookout Tray (one entree, two sides and a drink), about $7.39–$7.99 depending on the store.
  • Cheapest full meal: a Jr. Tray, from about $5.29.
  • Lightest real meal in our math: a small hamburger with a tray side of onion rings and unsweet tea, 373 calories.
  • Most protein per order in our builds: a Huge Hamburger with two nugget sides, 60 g of protein in 804 calories.
  • Dessert: 40+ milkshake flavors, plus Coke and Cheerwine floats.

Every calorie and protein figure on this page comes from Cook Out’s published nutrition facts sheet unless a row says otherwise, and every order total was added up item by item.

Best Late-Night Orders

What Is the Best Late-Night Order at Cook Out?

For most people the best late-night Cook Out order is a Cookout Tray, because one entree, two sides and a drink is a complete meal for about $7.39–$7.99. Which tray is best depends on what you want: the Big Double Cook Out Style tray for the classic Carolina flavor, the char-grilled chicken tray with two nugget sides for protein, or a quesadilla tray for something cheesy.

OrderWhat you getCaloriesProteinWhy order it late
Carolina classic trayBig Double (311) + Cook Out Style (123) + regular fries (347) + onion rings tray side (128) + regular Cheerwine (144)1,05330 gChili, slaw, onions and mustard; the most Carolina order on the menu
Protein trayChar-grilled chicken sandwich (377) + 2 nugget tray sides (144 each) + regular unsweet tea (0)66545 gMost protein for the fewest calories of these builds
Quesadilla trayChicken quesadilla (449) + Cook Out Rounds tray side (149) + nuggets tray side (144) + regular Diet Coke (0)74233 gCheesy and crispy with a zero-calorie drink
Spicy chicken traySpicy chicken sandwich (446) + cheese bites tray side (150) + regular fries (347) + regular Coke Zero Sugar (0)94333 gAll-crunch order with some heat
BBQ trayBBQ sandwich (368) + hushpuppies tray side (300) + onion rings tray side (128) + regular sweet tea (236)1,03234 gChopped pork with slaw, the eastern-Carolina-style pick
Hot dog tray2 hot dogs tray entree (520)* + side of chili (164) + regular fries (347) + regular sweet tea (236)1,26725 gMake your own chili fries; heavy on sodium (2,805 mg)
Strips trayChicken strips, 3 pc (660) + regular fries (347) + onion rings tray side (128) + regular Coca-Cola (140)1,27543 gBig chicken order; sodium reaches 3,145 mg
Burger and a shakeBig Double (311) + Cook Out Style (123) + nuggets tray side (144) + onion rings tray side (128) + vanilla milkshake (555)1,26152 gDessert built in; a shake costs extra over a fountain drink

*Cook Out does not publish a separate line for the two-dog tray entree; it is calculated as two plain hot dogs (2 × 260 calories). Fries on a tray are counted as a regular order (347 calories) because Cook Out lists no separate tray-side fry portion. Drinks are regular 16 oz fountain sizes, and sauces are not included.

Why these eight? Each one uses a different entree family from the Cook Out tray menu, so you can see how the choice of entree and drink moves the totals. Three patterns show up:

  • The drink is the easiest swing. A regular sweet tea adds 236 calories and a regular Cheerwine 144, while unsweet tea, Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar add none. The full list is on the drinks menu.
  • Fries and hushpuppies are the heavy sides. A regular fries is 347 calories and a hushpuppy tray side 300, against 128 for an onion ring tray side and 144 for nuggets. See the fries guide and the hush puppies guide.
  • Sodium climbs fast after dark. The strips tray (3,145 mg) and hot dog tray (2,805 mg) both pass the 2,300 mg Daily Value in one meal.

If you want the signature burger, the Big Double burger guide covers every style; for chicken, compare the chicken strips and nuggets; and for the hot dog lineup, see the hot dogs guide.

Lighter After Midnight

What Can You Get at Cook Out Under 500 or 700 Calories After Midnight?

Under 500 calories, the best late-night Cook Out orders are a full order of nuggets (240), a small hamburger with onion rings (373) or a plain hot dog with nuggets (404); under 700, a char-grilled chicken tray with two nugget sides (665) is the most filling. The trick is pairing a zero-calorie drink with the two lightest sides, onion rings and nuggets.

OrderCaloriesProteinSodium
Full order of nuggets + regular Diet Coke24016 g550 mg
Small hamburger (245) + onion rings tray side (128) + regular unsweet tea37317 g638 mg

Big Double, plain (311) + onion rings tray side (128) + nuggets tray side (144) + regular Diet Coke58333 g996 mg
Char-grilled chicken sandwich (377) + 2 nugget tray sides (144 each) + regular unsweet tea66545 g1,224 mg

All figures are Cook Out’s published values added together. Burgers are listed plain unless a style is named; the Everything Style add-on is 91 calories and Cook Out Style 123. Onion ring and nugget sides are the smaller tray-side portions, which is what you get when you name them as one of the two sides in a tray.

Ways to keep a late order lighter without leaving hungry:

  • Pick onion rings or nuggets as tray sides. They are the two lightest tray sides on Cook Out’s sheet at 128 and 144 calories. The onion rings guide and sides menu have the full comparison.
  • Go grilled. The plain char-grilled chicken sandwich is 377 calories with 25 g of protein, against 446 for the spicy chicken sandwich and 660 for three chicken strips.
  • Watch the slaw line. Cook Out’s sheet lists a side of slaw at 405 calories, so it is not the light pick it looks like.
  • Skip the shake or share it. Even the lightest milkshake on the sheet, Fresh Banana, is 538 calories; a float is about 400.

Build your own late order in the Cook Out calorie calculator, or see every item on the Cook Out nutrition page.

High-Protein Orders

What Is the Highest-Protein Late-Night Order at Cook Out?

The highest-protein late-night order in our math is a Huge Hamburger with two nugget tray sides and unsweet tea: 60 g of protein in 804 calories. The half-pound Huge Hamburger alone has 40 g of protein, more than any other single sandwich or burger on Cook Out’s sheet.

OrderCaloriesProteinProtein per 100 calSodium
Huge Hamburger (516) + 2 nugget tray sides (144 each) + regular unsweet tea80460 g7.5 g1,059 mg
Chicken strips, 3 pc (660) + 2 nugget tray sides + regular Diet Coke94856 g5.9 g2,788 mg
Char-grilled chicken, Club Style (565)* + nuggets tray side + cheese bites tray side (150) + regular unsweet tea85953 g6.2 g1,964 mg
Char-grilled chicken, Cheddar Style (534) + 2 nugget tray sides + regular Coke Zero Sugar82253 g6.4 g1,901 mg
Char-grilled chicken sandwich (377) + 2 nugget tray sides + regular unsweet tea66545 g6.8 g1,224 mg
Char-grilled chicken sandwich (377) + full order of nuggets (240) + regular unsweet tea61741 g6.6 g1,116 mg

*Club Style chicken calories (565) are official, but Cook Out’s sheet repeats the plain breast’s macros on that line, so its protein is our estimate (plain breast plus the bacon-and-cheese add-on) and should be treated as approximate.

How to read the table:

  • The Huge Hamburger wins on efficiency. At 7.5 g of protein per 100 calories, the Huge Hamburger tray beats every chicken build here, and its 1,059 mg of sodium is the lowest of the top four.
  • Nuggets are the most protein-dense side. A nugget tray side adds 10 g of protein for 144 calories, while a cheese bites side adds 8 g for 150. Fries add 4 g for 347 calories.
  • Strips bring salt. Three strips have 36 g of protein but 2,130 mg of sodium before any side.
  • Protein shakes, sort of. The Fresh Peanut Butter and Peanut Butter Banana shakes have 27 g of protein each, the most of any shake, but they run 847 and 864 calories.

Ordering tip for gym crowds and night-shift workers: ask for a burger plain or with a lighter style. Cheddar Style adds 233 calories and Out West Style 202, while Steak Style and Everything Style add 91 each. Details are in the burger menu guide.

Biggest Orders

What Is the Most Filling Thing to Order at Cook Out Late at Night?

The most filling late-night Cook Out orders are built on the half-pound Huge Hamburger, the Chicken Strip Club or the BBQ Plate; a Huge Hamburger Cheddar Style with large fries, hushpuppies and a large sweet tea reaches 1,991 calories. These are big meals by any measure, so they work best shared or as the one real meal of a long night.

OrderCaloriesProteinSodium

Beef quesadilla (514) + cheese bites tray side (150) + hushpuppies tray side (300) + regular Cheerwine (144)1,10832 g1,869 mg

We left price-per-calorie out of this table on purpose: individual item prices differ from store to store and change often, so only the tray price range is stated on this page. Check your store’s menu board for exact prices.

What makes an order filling at Cook Out is mostly the entree and the sides, not the drink:

  • Huge Hamburger: half a pound of beef, 516 calories and 40 g of protein before toppings.
  • Chicken Strip Club: 846 calories and 39 g of protein, the heaviest chicken sandwich on the sheet.
  • BBQ Plate: 976 calories with chopped pork, slaw, fries and hushpuppies on one plate.
  • Large fries: 694 calories, double the regular order.
  • Full hushpuppies: 600 calories for the full order, about a dozen pieces.

Adding a milkshake is the fastest way to double down: the Reese’s Cup shake alone is 894 calories, more than most entrees. If you are after flavor combinations rather than size, the Cook Out secret menu covers the off-menu orders people ask for.

Late-Night Shakes

Can You Get a Milkshake at Cook Out After Midnight?

Yes. Cook Out’s milkshakes, more than 40 flavors at about $3.99 each, are served until the store closes, and they range from 538 calories (Fresh Banana) to 925 (Cherry Cheesecake) on Cook Out’s nutrition sheet. Floats are lighter at about 400 calories.

Peanut Butter Banana86427 gTied for most protein of any shake
Reese’s Cup89424 gSecond-heaviest shake
Cherry Cheesecake92521 gHeaviest shake on the sheet

Milkshakes come in one size. Cook Out’s sheet lists 44 milkshake flavors plus the two floats, and seasonal flavors such as Fresh Watermelon come and go. Auburn’s student newspaper, The Plainsman, made the late-night case simply when it picked Cook Out as its best late-night food: the shakes are “a great complement to a 2 a.m. food run.”

Late-night shake tips:

  • Add it to a tray. You can order a shake with a tray instead of, or in addition to, the fountain drink; it costs extra over the tray price.
  • Split one. At 31 to 35 ounces by weight, a single shake is easy to share between two people.
  • Order shakes early near closing. Near the end of the night some stores run low on popular flavors or stop making items while equipment is cleaned.
  • Fruit flavors are the lighter flavors. Banana, peach, vanilla, caramel and pineapple all sit under 600 calories, while candy and cheesecake flavors run from about 700 to 925.

Every flavor with its calories is on the Cook Out milkshake menu, and other sweets are on the desserts menu and ice cream menu.

Cheap Late-Night Eats

What Is the Cheapest Late-Night Meal at Cook Out?

The cheapest complete late-night meal at Cook Out is a Jr. Tray, from about $5.29, and the best value for most adults is a regular Cookout Tray at about $7.39 to $7.99 for an entree, two sides and a drink. Prices are set by each store and vary by market, so treat these as typical ranges.

The tray is the core of late-night value at Cook Out: you pick one entree, then two sides, then a drink, for one price.

Budget tip: Put your hungriest choice in the entree slot, then use the two sides for variety. A tray with nuggets and onion rings as sides gives you three different foods for one price.
  • Cookout Tray: about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Milkshakes: about $3.99
  • Payment: cash and cards accepted

Student papers keep making the same point. Clemson’s student newspaper, The Tiger, named Cook Out its Best Drunk Food in the Best of Clemson 2025 series, quoting a sophomore who called it “so cheap and filling, especially the Cook Out trays.” Auburn’s Plainsman noted you can get “an entrée, two sides and a drink for half of what one meal costs at other restaurants.”

Ways to stretch a late-night budget:

  • Order trays, not separate items. The tray bundles a drink and two sides that would otherwise be priced individually.
  • Share full-size sides. A full order of hushpuppies (600 calories) or large fries (694) feeds two people as a side.
  • Gift cards make good group kitty money. See the Cook Out gift cards guide.
  • Delivery costs more. App menus can be priced above in-store prices and add fees, so picking up yourself is cheapest.

For the full list of entrees and sides you can put on a tray, see the tray menu and the main Cook Out menu.

Shareable Orders

What Should a Group Order at Cook Out Late at Night?

For a late-night group, the simplest Cook Out order is one tray per person, plus a couple of full-size sides to share; four mixed trays total 4,062 calories, about 1,016 per person. Sides-only spreads are lighter per person and work well when everyone has already eaten dinner.

All totals add Cook Out’s published values item by item and divide evenly; real portions shared at a table will not be even. The 2-hot-dog tray entree is calculated as two plain hot dogs. Drinks are regular 16 oz sizes unless named.

Group-order tips that save time at the speaker:

  • Write the order down first. Read it tray by tray: entree, side, side, drink. It is the format the order-taker expects.
  • Name the tray number for each person. “Tray one, tray two” makes it easy to check the bags at the window.
  • Ask for sauces up front. Cook Out lists nuggets and strips without sauce; ask for the sauces you want while ordering.
  • Order shared sides as full orders. Full orders of hushpuppies, onion rings, nuggets, cheese bites and Rounds are each a larger portion than the tray side.
  • Check allergens before you order for someone else. The allergen guide and vegan menu cover what to ask about.

More on the shareable sides: cheese bites, quesadillas, onion rings and hush puppies.

Drive-Thru & Finding a Store

How Do You Find an Open Cook Out and Order Fast at the Drive-Thru?

Use a store locator to find the nearest Cook Out, check that store’s posted hours, and plan on the drive-thru after late evening, because at stores with dining rooms the lobby often closes hours before the drive-thru. The standard Cook Out building has two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window and no indoor seating, so at most stores the drive-thru is how everyone orders anyway.

Some newer Cook Outs have added dining rooms with counter service. When the Tifton, Georgia, store opened in September 2019, the local paper reported a dining room open until 10 PM Sunday–Wednesday, while the drive-thru ran until 2 AM. Exact lobby and drive-thru hours differ by store, so the drive-thru is the safer bet after 10 PM.

How to find an open store:

Drive-thru tips for after midnight:

  • Decide before the speaker. Tray orders go entree, side, side, drink; knowing all four keeps the line moving.
  • Expect lines on weekend nights. Stores near campuses and nightlife can get busy late on Fridays and Saturdays. A Murray State News story on the then-new Murray, Kentucky, store quoted an employee saying “we usually get a rush around midnight.”
  • Check the bag before you pull off. Late-night orders are big and fast; confirm the sides and the drink.
  • Walk-up window: students on foot can order at the walk-up window at standard stores during its posted hours.
  • Payment: cash and cards are accepted.
Late-Night Delivery

Does Cook Out Deliver Late at Night?

Sometimes. Many Cook Out stores are listed on DoorDash and Uber Eats, but delivery hours are set per store and per app, and they are often shorter than the store’s own hours. If you want Cook Out after midnight, open your delivery app and check whether your nearest store is accepting orders at that moment.

The listings we checked in October 2026 show the range. Uber Eats listed both the Greensboro store on Battleground Avenue and the Raleigh store on Falls of Neuse Road with delivery hours of 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM, far earlier than the stores’ typical late-night close. A DoorDash listing for a Durham store showed 10:30 AM to 1:40 AM. These are snapshots, not rules: hours on the apps change and depend on the store, the app and driver availability.

OptionLate-night availabilityWhat to know
Drive-thruUsually until close (about 3 AM, 4 AM Fri–Sat; varies)Full menu and in-store prices
Walk-up windowAt standard stores during posted hoursGood for students on foot
DoorDashStore- and app-dependent; one Durham listing showed 1:40 AMDoorDash says menu prices are estimated
Uber EatsStore- and app-dependent; Greensboro and Raleigh listings showed 9:30 PMFees and service charges apply

Practical late-night delivery tips:

  • Order before the app’s cutoff, which may be well before the restaurant’s posted closing time.
  • Expect higher totals. App menu prices can differ from in-store prices, and delivery and service fees are added on top.
  • Milkshakes travel poorly. A long late-night delivery can leave a shake melted; fries and onion rings also lose crunch.
  • Pick-up is the fallback. If no app shows your store open, the drive-thru usually is.

The Cook Out delivery guide covers apps, fees and how ordering works in more detail.

A few campus newspapers have written about Cook Out’s late-night role:

  • Clemson: The Tiger named Cook Out the Best Drunk Food in its Best of Clemson 2025 series and listed the Tiger Boulevard store’s hours as 10:30 AM to 3:30 AM Sunday–Thursday and until 4:30 AM Friday–Saturday.
  • Auburn: The Plainsman picked Cook Out as its best late-night food, describing a drive-thru line that backs up “as the night turns to morning.”
  • Murray: The Murray State News covered the new Murray store in August 2014 and reported it was open until 3 AM on weekdays and 4 AM on weekends.

Game days, move-in weekends and exam weeks can make any of these stores busy at unusual hours. Check the store’s posted hours before a late run, and see the hours guide for the weekly pattern.

Questions Answered

Cook Out Late Night FAQs

Answers to the questions people ask most.

Is Cook Out open late at night?

Yes. Most Cook Out restaurants stay open until about 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and about 4 AM on Friday and Saturday, opening again at 10:30 AM. Hours vary by store: Clemson’s store posted 3:30 AM and 4:30 AM closes in 2025, while some stores close earlier. Check your store’s posted hours or our hours guide before a late run.

Is the full Cook Out menu available late at night?

Yes. Cook Out serves the same menu from opening to close, so trays, burgers, chicken, hot dogs, quesadillas, sides and milkshakes are all available after midnight. The exceptions are items that sell out and equipment shut down for cleaning in the last few minutes before closing, so arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes before close.

What is the best thing to order at Cook Out late at night?

A Cookout Tray is the best all-round late-night order: one entree, two sides and a drink for about $7.39 to $7.99. A Big Double Cook Out Style tray with fries, onion rings and a Cheerwine totals 1,053 calories, while a char-grilled chicken tray with two nugget sides and unsweet tea is 665 calories with 45 g of protein.

What is the healthiest late-night order at Cook Out?

Lighter late-night picks include a full order of nuggets with Diet Coke (240 calories), a small hamburger with an onion ring tray side and unsweet tea (373 calories), and a char-grilled chicken sandwich with onion rings (505 calories). Choose onion rings or nuggets as tray sides and a zero-calorie drink to keep a tray under 700 calories.

Can you get a milkshake at Cook Out after midnight?

Yes. Milkshakes are served until close at most stores, with more than 40 flavors at about $3.99. On Cook Out’s nutrition sheet they range from 538 calories for Fresh Banana to 925 for Cherry Cheesecake, and the Coke and Cheerwine floats are about 400. Order before the final minutes before close, when some items may be unavailable during cleanup.

Does Cook Out deliver after midnight?

It depends on the store and the app. Many Cook Outs are on DoorDash and Uber Eats, but app hours are often shorter than store hours: in October 2026, Uber Eats listings for Greensboro and Raleigh stores showed a 9:30 PM cutoff, while one Durham DoorDash listing showed 1:40 AM. Check your app; the drive-thru is the reliable fallback.

Is Cook Out drive-thru only at night?

Most Cook Outs have no dining room at all, just two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window, so ordering works the same at night. Newer stores with dining rooms may close the lobby earlier: the Tifton, Georgia, store opened in 2019 with a 10 PM dining room close on some nights and a 2 AM drive-thru.

What is the cheapest late-night meal at Cook Out?

The Jr. Tray, from about $5.29, is the cheapest complete meal, and a regular Cookout Tray at about $7.39 to $7.99 is the best value for most adults since it includes an entree, two sides and a drink. Prices vary by store, and delivery apps usually cost more than ordering at the drive-thru.
