University Boulevard is the main north-south road along the east side of the South Alabama campus. Old Shell Road, the long east-west road that runs from west Mobile toward downtown, meets University Boulevard at the heart of the university, and Airport Boulevard, one of the city’s busiest commercial roads, crosses it a little farther south. The store’s “S.” address puts it on the stretch below Old Shell Road, so students, hospital staff, shoppers on Airport Boulevard and drivers coming off I-65 all reach it easily.

  • Address: 116 S. University Blvd, Mobile, AL 36608.
  • Typical hours: 10:30 AM to about 3 AM Sunday–Thursday and about 4 AM Friday–Saturday; hours vary by store.

People on the Eastern Shore of Baldwin County may find Foley just as convenient, depending on where they live.

What to Look For

What Does the Cook Out on University Blvd Look Like?

The Mobile Cook Out moved into a building that was previously a PDQ chicken restaurant, according to WKRG News 5 and NBC 15 reports from February 2018; beyond that, we have not found a published description of the store’s exterior, so this guide does not invent one.

If you searched for “Cook Out Mobile photos,” the most reliable current pictures are the customer and owner photos on the store’s Google Maps listing, which you can open from the directions button in the directory above. Those photos are updated far more often than any guide can be and show the current signage, menu boards and drive-thru lanes.

What you can expect at almost any Cook Out applies here too: ordering is built around the drive-thru, and most stores also have a walk-up window rather than a large indoor dining room. If you are meeting friends, plan to eat in the car, take the food back to campus or carry it home.

Former use: a PDQ restaurant (chicken), per WKRG and NBC 15, February 19, 2018.

Street: University Boulevard, on the South Alabama side of Mobile.

Local Timeline

When Did Cook Out Come to Mobile?

Cook Out’s arrival in Mobile was first reported in February 2018, when local outlets said the chain had bought the former PDQ building on University Boulevard near the University of South Alabama; we have not found a reliable published opening date, so this guide does not give one.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina; the chain later expands across the Southeast.

February 19, 2018: WKRG News 5 and NBC 15 report that Cook Out is coming to Mobile at 116 South University Boulevard, in a building that previously housed a PDQ. At the time, Lagniappe noted that the closest Cook Outs to Mobile were in Hattiesburg and Tuscaloosa, and no opening date had been announced.

Today: Cook Out’s locator shows 15 open Alabama stores in October 2026, and University Boulevard is the only one in Mobile County and the only one in the Mobile area.

The geography explains why Mobile feels isolated. Alabama’s other Cook Outs are mostly in the central and northern parts of the state, from Troy and Montgomery up toward Birmingham and Huntsville, while the Gulf Coast has only a handful of stores spread across three states: Mobile, Foley, Pensacola and Gulfport. Alabama has no statewide guide on this site yet; for the nearest Alabama city guide, see our Troy, AL guide, and for the full map use the locations finder.

Coming from each direction

  • From Montgomery or Saraland on I-65 south: stay on I-65 through the north side of Mobile to exit 3, then go west on Airport Boulevard to University Boulevard.
  • From Pensacola or the Eastern Shore on I-10 west: cross Mobile Bay on I-10, follow it to the I-65 interchange, take I-65 north to exit 3 and continue west on Airport Boulevard.
  • From Gulfport or Pascagoula on I-10 east: take I-65 north at the I-10 interchange and exit at Airport Boulevard (exit 3).

Road tip: the Airport Boulevard and University Boulevard intersection is one of the busiest in Mobile. In 2001 State Farm called it the most dangerous intersection in Alabama, so allow a little extra time at rush hour and on event nights.

Late-Night Food

Is the Mobile Cook Out Near the University of South Alabama?

Students without a car should note that Cook Out is built around the drive-thru and walk-up window rather than an indoor dining room, so plan on a ride or delivery. On game days at Hancock Whitney Stadium, and especially during Senior Bowl week in late January, expect heavier traffic on University Boulevard and Old Shell Road.

Late-Night Hours

What Time Does Cook Out Close in Mobile?

Most Cook Out stores open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and around 4 AM on Friday and Saturday, and directory listings for the University Boulevard store show that same pattern. Hours vary by store and can change on holidays, so check the store’s Google Maps listing before a late drive.

Typical schedule: 10:30 AM open every day, about 3 AM close Sun–Thu, about 4 AM close Fri–Sat. Ordering is mainly through the drive-thru, and most Cook Outs also have a walk-up window rather than an indoor dining room.

DayTypical openTypical close
Sunday10:30 AMabout 3:00 AM

These are typical hours, not an official posted schedule from Cook Out. Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays often bring shorter hours or a closure, and staffing can occasionally close a window early.

Mardi Gras note: Mobile’s Carnival season brings weeks of parades, mostly downtown, and heavy traffic on parade nights. The store is about 8 miles west of the downtown routes, so it can make a good late stop on the way home to west Mobile, but expect busier lines on big parade weekends.

For holiday patterns and drive-thru-only nights, see our guide to what time Cook Out closes and our late-night food guide.

Late-night tip: Mobile has no backup store. If the window closes early, the next Cook Out is about 30 miles away in Foley, so check the listing before you leave Saraland, Grand Bay or the Eastern Shore.

Ordering tips for University Boulevard: the line moves fastest when you order by tray, for example “a Big Double tray, Cook Out Style, with hush puppies and onion rings, sweet tea to drink.” Shakes are made to order, so ask for them with the meal instead of adding them at the window. Feeding a dorm floor after a Jaguars game or a group heading home from a parade? Several trays usually cost less than combo meals at the other chains along Airport Boulevard.

Local Comparison

How Does Cook Out Compare to Mobile’s Local Favorites?

Cook Out’s edge in Mobile is a full tray with two sides for under $8 and a drive-thru that usually runs until 3 or 4 AM; Mobile’s own chicken-finger chain, Foosackly’s, opened its first restaurant on the same road, University Boulevard, in 2000.

Foosackly’s, founded in Mobile by Will Fusaiotti and Eric Brechtel, focuses on chicken fingers, fries and Texas toast and has grown across coastal Alabama and Northwest Florida. Cook Out takes the opposite approach, with a long menu of burgers, chopped pork barbecue, chicken, hot dogs and quesadillas, plus more than 40 milkshake flavors. Mobile’s seafood restaurants and downtown spots are better for a long sit-down meal; Cook Out is the cheap, fast, late option.
