How Many Cook Out Locations Are in Fredericksburg, VA?
Two Cook Out restaurants carry a Fredericksburg, VA mailing address as of October 2026, according to Cook Out’s store locator: 2024 Plank Rd (22401) and 10108 Patriot Hwy (22407). One serves the Route 3 corridor on the west side of the city; the other serves the US-1 corridor south of town in Spotsylvania County.

The two stores are each roughly 2.4 miles from the center of Fredericksburg in straight-line terms, and roughly 4.7 miles apart from each other. Plank Road is the pick for downtown, the University of Mary Washington, Central Park and Spotsylvania Towne Centre. Patriot Highway is the pick for Massaponax, the Southpoint shopping area, Lee’s Hill and drivers coming up I-95 from the south.
- Fredericksburg – Plank Rd: 2024 Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, on Route 3 about 0.4 mile east of I-95 exit 130A, by the Greenbrier Shopping Center area.
- Fredericksburg – Patriot Hwy: 10108 Patriot Hwy, Fredericksburg, VA 22407, on US-1 about 0.9 mile southwest of I-95 exit 126 (US-1/US-17).
- Typical hours: 10:30 AM to about 3 AM Sunday–Thursday and about 4 AM Friday–Saturday; hours vary by store.
- Next-closest store: 800 England St in Ashland, about 35 miles south, off I-95 exit 92.
- Coming soon: Cook Out’s locator lists no coming-soon stores within 30 miles of Fredericksburg as of October 2026.
A note on jurisdiction, because it trips people up: “Fredericksburg” on an address does not always mean the independent City of Fredericksburg. ZIP code 22407 covers a large part of Spotsylvania County, and “Patriot Highway” is the name Spotsylvania County gave US-1 in 2021; inside the city the same road is called Emancipation Highway. So the Patriot Hwy store is in Spotsylvania County with a Fredericksburg mailing address. The Plank Rd store is on the city side of I-95, along the Route 3 retail strip that the city’s economic development office lists among Fredericksburg’s own shopping centers.
Looking for a Cook Out in Stafford, King George, Caroline County or Culpeper? None of those places has its own store in Cook Out’s locator as of October 2026, so drivers from all of them end up at one of these two stores or head south to Ashland.

When Did Cook Out Come to Fredericksburg?
Cook Out’s move into the Fredericksburg area was reported in August 2014, when Patch, citing Fredericksburg.com, said the chain had bought a lot at the Greenbrier Shopping Center on Plank Road for about $1.25 million. At the time that was described as the chain’s farthest-north location and one of two Cook Outs planned for the area.
1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina.
August 2014: Patch reports that Cook Out bought property at the Greenbrier Shopping Center on Plank Road and that two Cook Outs were planned for the Fredericksburg area.
2021: Spotsylvania County supervisors rename the county’s stretch of US-1 from Jefferson Davis Highway to Patriot Highway, which is why the southern store’s address now reads 10108 Patriot Hwy. Older listings, including some exit guides, still show it as 10108 Jefferson Davis Hwy.
Today: Cook Out’s locator lists 42 open Virginia stores as of October 2026, including both Fredericksburg-area locations.
We have not found a reliable published opening date for either store, so this guide gives only what was reported at the time. The pattern is clear, though: Cook Out chose the two busiest commercial corridors in the region, Route 3 at I-95 and US-1 near Massaponax, both of which carry heavy local and interstate traffic.
The address change on US-1 is worth knowing if you use an older GPS. Stafford County renamed its stretch of US-1 Richmond Highway, the City of Fredericksburg chose Emancipation Highway, and Spotsylvania picked Patriot Highway, so the same road changes names twice between Falmouth and Massaponax.
For all 42 Virginia stores, from Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads and the Blue Ridge, see the Cook Out Virginia guide.
How Do I Get to Cook Out From I-95, Route 3 or US-1?
From I-95, take exit 130A (Route 3 east) for the Plank Rd store, about 0.4 mile from the ramp, or exit 126 (US-1/US-17 south) for the Patriot Hwy store, about 0.9 mile away. Both stores are quick interstate stops.
| Highway | Exit / junction | Nearest Cook Out | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| I-95 | Exit 130A (Route 3 east, Fredericksburg) | 2024 Plank Rd | ~0.4 mi east of the exit |
| I-95 | Exit 130B (Route 3 west, Culpeper) | 2024 Plank Rd | Turn back east under I-95 |
| I-95 | Exit 126 (US-1, US-17 south, Massaponax) | 10108 Patriot Hwy | ~0.9 mi southwest of the exit |
| Route 3 (Plank Rd) | West side of the city | 2024 Plank Rd | On the road itself |
| US-1 (Patriot Hwy / Emancipation Hwy) | South of the city | 10108 Patriot Hwy | On the road itself |
Coming from each direction
- From Washington, D.C. or Northern Virginia on I-95 south: exit 130A comes first, and Plank Rd is a short run east on Route 3. If traffic is backed up around exit 130, as it often is near Central Park, carry on to exit 126 for Patriot Hwy.
- From Richmond on I-95 north: exit 126 is the first Fredericksburg-area exit with a Cook Out; the store is on US-1 a little under a mile from the ramp, near the Southpoint Pkwy shopping area with Walmart and Lowe’s.
- From Culpeper or Chancellor on Route 3 east: stay on Plank Road past Salem Church and Spotsylvania Towne Centre, go under I-95, and the store is shortly after on the city side.
- From Stafford or Falmouth: I-95 south to exit 130A is usually quicker than fighting US-1 through downtown.
- From Caroline County and Fort A.P. Hill: head north on US-17 or US-1 toward Massaponax; the Patriot Hwy store is the closer of the two.
Local driving note: the Route 3 interchange at exit 130 is one of the busiest in the region, with Spotsylvania Towne Centre and Central Park on the west side of the interstate. Cafaro, the mall’s owner, puts Route 3 traffic there at roughly 80,000 vehicles a day, so allow extra time on weekend afternoons. Late at night the drive is easy.
Is There a Cook Out Near the University of Mary Washington, the Hospitals or Spotsylvania Towne Centre?
Yes. The Plank Rd store is the closest Cook Out to the University of Mary Washington, Mary Washington Hospital, Central Park and Spotsylvania Towne Centre, while the Patriot Hwy store is closer to HCA Spotsylvania Regional Hospital and the Southpoint area. Both keep the chain’s typical late hours, which matters in a region where most restaurants close well before midnight.
University of Mary WashingtonThe campus is on the west side of the historic city, a short drive east of the Plank Rd store along Route 3 and William Street. It is the natural late-night run for students.
Mary Washington HospitalAt 1001 Sam Perry Blvd in the city. Night-shift staff and visitors are closer to Plank Rd than to Patriot Hwy.
HCA Spotsylvania Regional HospitalAt 4600 Spotsylvania Pkwy in Spotsylvania County, south of town. The Patriot Hwy store is the nearer of the two.
Spotsylvania Towne CentreThe regional mall sits at the junction of I-95 and Route 3 (Plank Road), on the west side of the interstate, about a mile from the Plank Rd Cook Out.
Central ParkThe big open-air shopping and dining district right off I-95, next to Celebrate Virginia South. Plank Rd is just across the interstate.
Southpoint and MassaponaxWalmart, Lowe’s, Marquee Cinemas Southpoint 9 and several hotels cluster around I-95 exit 126, close to the Patriot Hwy store.
For service members: Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, which reverted to that name (now honoring three Union Medal of Honor recipients) in August 2025, has no Cook Out nearby, so soldiers and civilians there usually drive north to the Patriot Hwy store. Marine Corps Base Quantico is farther north up I-95, and Cook Out’s locator lists no store in Stafford County.

Late-night tip: if the line at one store is long, the other is only about 10 minutes away on I-95 at night (exit 126 to exit 130 is about four miles). Ordering tips for Fredericksburg: the drive-thru moves fastest if you order by tray (for example, “a Big Double tray, Cook Out Style, with hush puppies and onion rings, sweet tea to drink”). Shakes take longer, so order them with the meal rather than adding them at the window. If you are feeding a carload on a trip up or down I-95, several trays usually cost less than combo meals at the other chains around exits 126 and 130.
For full details see the Cookout Tray menu, the milkshake menu and the Cook Out calories guide.
How Does Cook Out Compare to Other Food in Fredericksburg?
Cook Out’s edge in Fredericksburg is a full tray for under $8 and a drive-thru that stays open until about 3 or 4 AM, long after most restaurants on Route 3 and US-1 have closed. Downtown restaurants and the sit-down chains at Central Park are a different kind of meal, with earlier closing times.
Fredericksburg has a real dining scene downtown along Caroline and William streets, plus a long list of national chains on Route 3, US-1 and around Central Park. Cook Out competes on price, menu range and late hours rather than atmosphere. It is where commuters grab dinner after the long drive home from Northern Virginia, where students go after a late night, and where I-95 travelers stop when everything else is dark.
| Need | Cook Out (Fredericksburg) | Typical alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Meal after midnight | Open until about 3–4 AM | Most chains on Route 3 and US-1 close earlier |
| Cheap full meal | Tray: entree + 2 sides + drink | Combo meals usually cost more |
| Barbecue sandwich | Chopped pork with slaw on the menu | Local barbecue spots with daytime and evening hours |
| Milkshake | 40+ shake flavors at the drive-thru | Ice cream shops with earlier closing |
| Sit-down dinner | Drive-thru and walk-up focused | Downtown restaurants and Central Park sit-down chains |
| Quick I-95 stop | Both stores within a mile of an exit | Fast-food clusters at exits 126 and 130 |
If you want a long dinner downtown, Fredericksburg has plenty of choices. But for a burger, a barbecue sandwich, hush puppies and a banana pudding shake at 1 AM, the two Fredericksburg-area Cook Outs are hard to beat.
