Local Timeline

When Did Cook Out Come to Richmond?

Cook Out’s first Richmond-area store opened on Eastridge Rd in western Henrico in December 2010. The W Broad St store followed in 2011, and S Laburnum Ave in 2013. Richmond BizSense covered each step, and its reports are the source for the dates below.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina.

December 2010: The first Richmond-area Cook Out opens on Eastridge Rd in Henrico, near Regency Square. BizSense later reported it was popular enough to back up traffic in a nearby turn lane.

Early 2011: Construction starts in late January on 4802 W Broad St, a former Bullets burger stand near Staples Mill Rd. By June the store is open with two drive-thru lanes, a walk-up window and no indoor dining.

May 2013: Cook-Out pays $1.05 million for a one-acre former Wells Fargo branch at 4300 S Laburnum Ave, near the Shops at White Oak Village. It becomes the third Richmond store in less than three years.

April 2017: BizSense reports that the Captain D’s at 4245 Pouncey Tract Rd in Short Pump will become a Cook Out. Cook Out had signed a 20-year lease in 2016. By then the metro also had stores in Mechanicsville, on Midlothian Turnpike and in Colonial Heights.

January 2020: BizSense notes that 4802 W Broad St remains the chain’s only location inside Richmond city limits, and that most of its regional stores are in Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover counties.

2023: Cook Out becomes the title sponsor of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway in Henrico.

October 2026: Cook Out’s locator lists 9 open stores across the Richmond metro and Tri-Cities, including Ashland and Hopewell.

Opening dates for the Mechanicsville, Midlothian Turnpike, Colonial Heights, Ashland and Hopewell stores weren’t confirmed in local news coverage, so they are left off the timeline.

Ordering Guide

Cook Out Richmond Menu and Prices (2026)

A Cookout Tray (an entrée, two sides and a drink) costs about $7.39 to $7.99 in Richmond, and a Jr. Tray starts at about $5.29. The menu is the same one served at Cook Out’s North Carolina stores, and prices vary a little by store.

First-timer tip: Order a Big Double “Cook Out Style” (chili, slaw, onions and mustard), pick hushpuppies and a corn dog as sides, and swap the soda for a milkshake or a Cheerwine.
  • Cookout Tray: about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Milkshakes: about $3.99, with 40+ flavors
  • Drinks: soft drinks, sweet tea and Cheerwine

Ordering for a group from the W Broad St drive-thru? Have everyone’s tray order ready, entrée first, then the two sides, then the drink. It keeps the line moving. For more detail, see the tray menu, the milkshake menu, the burger menu and the secret menu.

How It Compares

How Does Cook Out Compare to Richmond’s Food Favorites?

Cook Out is the late-night value play in Richmond. A full tray and a shake cost about what a single combo costs elsewhere, and it serves hours after most local spots close. Richmond’s own barbecue and burger places compete on quality and atmosphere instead.

For sit-down barbecue, Richmond’s smokehouses are a different kind of meal, and they close at night. Cook Out’s own BBQ plate is chopped, North Carolina-style pork, and you can get it at 2 AM. Compared with Wawa or Sheetz, a Cook Out tray is usually cheaper for a full meal, but convenience stores stay open around the clock.
