Illustration of a Cook Out restaurant lit up at night – Cook Out Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach is Virginia’s most populous city and very spread out, so the two stores are about 10 miles apart. The Indian River Rd store is about 0.3 mile from I-64 exit 286 and about half a mile from Regent University, which makes it the natural stop for Kempsville, the CBN and Regent area, and anyone driving in from Norfolk or Chesapeake. The General Booth Blvd store sits in the 1600 block of General Booth, near its intersection with Dam Neck Rd, which makes it the closest Cook Out to the Oceanfront hotels, the Virginia Aquarium, NAS Oceana and Dam Neck.

  • Virginia Beach – Indian River Rd: 5670 Indian River Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 (about 0.3 mi from I-64 exit 286).
  • Virginia Beach – General Booth Blvd: 1634 General Booth Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 (south of the Oceanfront, near Dam Neck Rd).
  • Typical hours: 10:30 AM to about 3 AM Sunday–Thursday and about 4 AM Friday–Saturday; hours vary by store.
  • Next-closest stores: 1105 N Military Hwy in Norfolk (about 8 mi from central Virginia Beach) and 1328 Battlefield Blvd N in Chesapeake (about 9 mi).
  • Coming soon: Cook Out’s locator lists 1010 Independence Blvd in Virginia Beach and 3216 Western Branch Blvd in Chesapeake as coming soon. Neither is open yet, so neither appears in the directory below.

1. Cook Out in Virginia Beach — 2 Cook Out locations

Think of the two stores as the inland store and the beach store. Indian River Rd sits right off I-64 on the Kempsville side, next to Regent University and The Founders Inn. General Booth Blvd is the road that runs from the south end of the resort area past the Virginia Aquarium toward Princess Anne Rd, and the Cook Out sits on it near Dam Neck Rd, between NAS Oceana and the Dam Neck Annex.

2. Nearby Cook Out Locations in Norfolk, Chesapeake & Portsmouth — 5 Cook Out locations

Northwest Virginia Beach, including Pembroke, Town Center and Bayside, is often closer to a Norfolk store than to either Virginia Beach store. Norfolk has three Cook Outs, the most of any Virginia city, and Chesapeake and Portsmouth each have one.

3. Nearby Cook Out Location on the Peninsula — 1 Cook Out location

Across the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, the Hampton store is the last one within about 24 miles. Allow extra time for tunnel traffic.

Neighborhood Guide

Which Cook Out Is Closest to My Part of Virginia Beach?

Use General Booth Blvd for the Oceanfront, Hilltop, Lynnhaven, Oceana, Dam Neck and Sandbridge; use Indian River Rd for Kempsville, Regent University and the I-64 corridor; and consider Norfolk’s N Military Hwy store for Pembroke, Town Center and Bayside. Because the city is so large, the closest store can be across the Norfolk line.

Summer changes the math. When Oceanfront traffic is heavy on I-264 and Laskin Rd, the General Booth Blvd store, south of the busiest blocks, is usually easier to reach than anything in Norfolk. In the off-season, residents in central Virginia Beach often pick whichever store is on the way home.

Virginia Beach History

Is a New Cook Out Coming to Virginia Beach?

Yes, a third Virginia Beach store is in the pipeline: Cook Out’s locator lists 1010 Independence Blvd as coming soon, on a former KFC site that a Cook Out entity bought in 2021. No opening date has been published, and the site, bought in 2021, is still listed as coming soon in October 2026, so treat it as a future option.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina. The chain later grows up into Virginia, where Hampton Roads now has one of the state’s densest clusters of stores.

Opening dates: We have not found reliable published opening dates for the Indian River Rd or General Booth Blvd stores, so we do not give them.

July 2021: Virginia Business reports that Cook Out – Virginia Beach Inc. bought the 2,745-square-foot former KFC building at 1010 Independence Blvd for about $2.44 million, with plans to open a Cook Out there.

October 2026: Cook Out’s locator lists 42 open Virginia stores, including both Virginia Beach locations, with 1010 Independence Blvd and 3216 Western Branch Blvd in Chesapeake shown as coming soon.

Until Independence Blvd opens, northwest Virginia Beach is the city’s biggest gap. That is why many people in Pembroke, Town Center and Bayside drive to Norfolk’s N Military Hwy store, which is about as close as Indian River Rd for much of that area.

Road Guide

How Do I Get to Cook Out From I-64, I-264 or the Oceanfront?

From I-64, take exit 286 (Indian River Rd); the Indian River Rd store is about 0.3 mile from the ramp. From the Oceanfront, head south onto General Booth Blvd past Rudee Inlet and the Virginia Aquarium to reach the General Booth Blvd store near Dam Neck Rd.

Coming from each direction

  • From Norfolk or Richmond (I-64 east): exit 286 for Indian River Rd. Regent University and The Founders Inn are on the same exit, so look for the Regent signs.
  • From the Oceanfront: General Booth Blvd starts at the south end of the resort area. Follow it south past the Virginia Aquarium at 717 General Booth Blvd; the Cook Out is a few miles further on, near Dam Neck Rd.
  • From NAS Oceana or Dam Neck: Dam Neck Rd crosses General Booth Blvd near the store and leads toward the Dam Neck Annex, so the General Booth store is the shortest run off either base.
  • From Sandbridge or the southern Princess Anne area: work north toward General Booth Blvd, which runs between the Oceanfront and Princess Anne Rd.
  • From the Outer Banks (Route 168 / I-64): the Chesapeake store at exit 290 and the Indian River Rd store at exit 286 are both minutes off I-64.

If you are on foot or a bike, the 6.1-mile General Booth Boulevard Trail runs alongside the road from the resort area to Princess Anne Rd and crosses Dam Neck Rd and Nimmo Pkwy, so the General Booth store is reachable without a car from parts of the south Oceanfront.

Late-Night Food

Is There a Cook Out Near NAS Oceana, Dam Neck or Regent University?

Yes. The General Booth Blvd store is about 3 miles from NAS Oceana and about 2 miles from the Dam Neck Annex, and the Indian River Rd store is about half a mile from Regent University. Both keep the chain’s typical late hours, which suits sailors, students and summer workers.

NAS OceanaThe Navy’s East Coast master jet base is in central Virginia Beach. The 1634 General Booth Blvd store is the closest Cook Out, about 3 miles away by straight line.

Dam Neck AnnexThe training annex on the oceanfront south of the resort area is about 2 miles from the General Booth store, reached via Dam Neck Rd.

Regent UniversityThe campus at 1000 Regent University Dr is right off I-64 exit 286, about half a mile from 5670 Indian River Rd. The Founders Inn and the CBN complex on Centerville Tpke are next door.

Oceanfront & Virginia AquariumThe aquarium’s main building at 717 General Booth Blvd is about 3 miles north of the Cook Out, and the boardwalk hotels are a few miles beyond that.

JEB Little Creek–Fort StoryThe amphibious base on the city’s north shore is closer to Norfolk’s N Military Hwy and E Little Creek Rd stores than to either Virginia Beach store.

Kempsville & Princess Anne RdThe shopping centers around Kempsville, including Providence Square and Fairfield, are about 1.5 to 2 miles from the Indian River Rd store.

Summer seasonal workers at the Oceanfront often finish late. For them, the General Booth Blvd drive-thru, open until about 3 or 4 AM, is one of the few full-meal options still serving after the boardwalk closes down.

Ordering tips for Virginia Beach: the drive-thru line moves fastest if you order by tray (for example, “a Big Double tray, Cook Out Style, with hush puppies and onion rings, Cheerwine to drink”). Local Comparison

How Does Cook Out Compare to Other Food Near the Oceanfront?

Cook Out’s edge in Virginia Beach is price and late hours: a full tray for under $8, served until about 3 or 4 AM, when most Oceanfront restaurants and the chains on Indian River Rd and General Booth Blvd have closed. For seafood or a sit-down meal by the water, local restaurants are the better pick.

Virginia Beach’s dining scene leans heavily on seafood, from Rudee Inlet to the Lynnhaven area, and the boardwalk has plenty of pizza, fries and ice cream for tourists. Indian River Rd near Kempsville and General Booth Blvd near Dam Neck Rd are both busy suburban corridors with the usual burger, chicken and sub chains. Cook Out stands out with its menu range, its 40-plus milkshake flavors and a tray price that undercuts most combo meals.
