Cook Out’s chicken menu is built like its burger menu: pick the sandwich, pick the style, and the style sets the toppings. This guide covers both chicken sandwiches, the char-grilled breast and the crispy spicy fillet. It lists what goes on every style according to Cook Out store menus, the calories, protein and sodium from Cook Out’s nutrition sheet, how the styles compare, how chicken stacks up against burgers and strips on protein, and exact totals for chicken trays. Where the official figures are incomplete, we say so.

Quick Answer

What Is the Cook Out Chicken Sandwich?

Cook Out sells two chicken sandwiches: a char-grilled chicken breast that comes in Original, Barbeque, Cajun, Club and Cheddar styles, and a crispy spicy chicken breast fillet that comes Regular Spicy Style or Cheese Style. On Cook Out’s nutrition sheet they run from 376 calories (Barbeque Style) to 634 calories (Spicy Chicken, Cheese Style).

Cook Out treats the chicken sandwich the same way it treats burgers: you pick the sandwich, then you pick a style, and the style decides the toppings. Say “Cajun chicken” or “chicken Cheddar Style” at the speaker and the grill knows exactly what to build. Store menu listings group the options under two headings, “Char-Grilled Chicken Breast” and “Crispy Spicy Chicken Breast Fillet,” with the breaded Homemade Style Chicken Strips listed separately.

  • Original Style: lettuce, tomato, mayo and honey mustard; 393 calories.
  • Barbeque Style: BBQ sauce, fresh sliced pickles and mayo; 376 calories.
  • Cajun Style: Cajun seasoning, Texas Pete, lettuce, tomato and mayo; 377 calories on the official sheet.
  • Club Style: bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo; 565 calories.
  • Cheddar Style: cheddar cheese, bacon, grilled onions and mayo; 534 calories.
  • Spicy Chicken: crispy spicy fillet with lettuce, tomato and mayo; 446 calories. Cheese Style is 634 calories.

Cook Out has served this menu since its early days as a Greensboro, North Carolina, drive-thru, founded by Morris Reaves in 1989. Today the chain runs about 370 stores in 11 states from its headquarters in Thomasville, North Carolina, and the chicken styles show up on store menus across the chain. Any chicken sandwich can be the entree on a Cookout Tray with two sides and a drink.

Style by Style

What Comes on Each Cook Out Chicken Style?

Original is lettuce, tomato, mayo and honey mustard; Barbeque is BBQ sauce, pickles and mayo; Cajun is Cajun seasoning, Texas Pete, lettuce, tomato and mayo; Club is bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo; Cheddar is cheddar, bacon, grilled onions and mayo. These descriptions come from Cook Out store menu listings in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina.

SandwichToppings on store menu listingsFlavor in one line
Original StyleLettuce, tomato, mayo, honey mustardSweet-tangy and fresh; the default grilled order
Barbeque StyleBBQ sauce, fresh sliced pickles, mayoSmoky-sweet with a pickle snap
Cajun StyleCajun seasoning, Texas Pete, lettuce, tomato, mayoSeasoned and peppery with vinegar hot sauce
Club StyleBacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayoA chicken club on a bun
Cheddar StyleCheddar cheese, bacon, grilled onions, mayoThe richest grilled option
Regular Spicy StyleCrispy spicy chicken breast fillet, lettuce, tomato, mayoBreaded, peppery and crunchy
Spicy, Cheese StyleCrispy spicy fillet, plain, with a slice of Kraft cheeseSpicy fillet and melted cheese, no veggies

Every grilled style starts with the same char-grilled chicken breast on a bun. Only the toppings change, which is why the grilled styles stay in a tight calorie band unless bacon and cheese get involved. The spicy sandwich is a different piece of chicken: a breaded, crispy spicy breast fillet, so it carries more carbs and sodium than the grilled breast before any toppings are added.

Is the Cajun chicken spicy?

It is seasoned and gets heat from Texas Pete, a vinegar-based Southern hot sauce, but it is still the grilled breast, not a breaded fillet. If you want crunch and heat together, order the Spicy Chicken Sandwich instead. Toppings can vary by store, so if a detail matters to you, ask your store before you pull up to the window.

What does “Club Style” mean on chicken?

Club Style adds bacon and cheese to the lettuce, tomato and mayo that Original Style uses, minus the honey mustard. Cook Out uses the same topping set on its Chicken Strips Club, which puts those toppings on breaded strips instead of the grilled breast. See the Cook Out chicken strips guide for that version.

How Many Calories Are in Each Cook Out Chicken Sandwich?

Cook Out’s grilled chicken sandwiches run 376 to 565 calories with 25 to 35 g of protein, and the spicy chicken sandwiches run 446 to 634 calories. The plain char-grilled breast sandwich is 377 calories, 17 g fat, 25 g protein and 575 mg sodium.

*Cajun Style: Cook Out’s nutrition sheet lists the Cajun Style row at 377 calories but shows 0 g of fat and protein, which reads like an add-on row rather than a full sandwich. The fat, protein and sodium shown here are our estimate: the plain breast sandwich plus the Cajun seasoning add (155 mg sodium, 1 g carbs). Store menus also list Texas Pete, lettuce, tomato and mayo on the Cajun sandwich, and it is not clear the official 377 includes all of them.

**Club Style: Cook Out’s sheet gives the Club Style sandwich 565 calories, but the rest of that row repeats the plain breast’s numbers. The fat, protein and sodium shown here are our calculation: the plain breast plus a bacon-and-cheese club add-on. Treat them as estimates.

Every other row is taken directly from Cook Out’s nutrition facts sheet, which lists each chicken style as a complete sandwich rather than as a topping add-on. That is different from the burgers, where the sheet lists the plain patty and each style’s toppings separately. If you want to see how the burgers work, the Cook Out burger styles guide breaks those down.

  • Lowest calories: Barbeque Style at 376, one calorie under the plain sandwich, which reflects rounding in the official figures.
  • Lowest sodium: the plain breast at 575 mg, then Original Style at 624 mg.
  • Most protein with verified numbers: Cheddar Style at 33 g and Spicy Cheese Style at 32 g.
  • Highest sodium: Spicy Chicken, Cheese Style at 1,942 mg, about 84% of the 2,300 mg Daily Value.

For every other menu item, see the Cook Out nutrition guide or the Cook Out calories list.

Head to Head

Which Cook Out Chicken Style Is the Healthiest?

The plain char-grilled breast and the Barbeque and Original styles are the lightest Cook Out chicken sandwiches, all under 400 calories with 25 g of protein; Original has the least sodium of the dressed styles. Club and Cheddar add roughly 160 to 190 calories, mostly from bacon and cheese.

StyleCaloriesCalories vs plainSodium vs plainSodium, % of 2,300 mg
Original Style393+16+49 mg27%
Barbeque Style376-1+139 mg31%
Cajun Style*3770+155 mg (est.)32%
Club Style**565+188+784 mg (est.)59%
Cheddar Style534+157+670 mg54%
Spicy Cheese vs Regular Spicy634+188+784 mg84%

The table measures each grilled style against the plain 377-calorie breast sandwich. Barbeque Style looks like a free upgrade on calories, but it adds 139 mg of sodium, mostly from the sauce and pickles. Original Style adds only 16 calories and 49 mg of sodium, so it is the best balance of flavor and numbers. Cheddar adds 157 calories and 670 mg of sodium; Club adds 188 calories by the official count.

Grilled vs. spicy: what is the real difference?

The grilled breast is the leaner piece of chicken. The plain grilled sandwich has 25 g of protein in 377 calories, while the Spicy Chicken Sandwich has 21 g in 446 calories and twice the sodium (1,158 mg vs 575 mg). The spicy sandwich also carries 45 g of carbs against 29 g for the grilled breast, largely from the breading. If you love the crunch, the Regular Spicy Style is a reasonable middle choice; the Cheese Style pushes it to 634 calories.

Which style has the most flavor for the fewest calories?

Cajun Style. On the official sheet it matches the plain breast at 377 calories while adding Cajun seasoning and Texas Pete. Keep the caveat above in mind: the official Cajun row is incomplete, so its true totals may be a little higher once lettuce, tomato and mayo are counted.

Protein Math

Is Cook Out Chicken Better for Protein Than a Burger or Strips?

Calorie for calorie, the plain grilled chicken sandwich (6.6 g protein per 100 calories) matches a plain Regular hamburger (6.7 g) and beats the chicken strips (5.5 g) and the spicy chicken sandwich (4.7 g). The plain Huge 1/2 lb burger is the protein champion at 7.8 g per 100 calories.

Protein per 100 calories is simply protein divided by calories, times 100, using Cook Out’s published figures. It is a quick way to compare entrees of different sizes. Breading lowers the number: the strips, strip sandwiches and spicy fillet all trail the grilled breast. Dressing a burger lowers it too, because styles add more calories than protein. A Regular burger drops from 6.7 g plain to 5.5 g Cook Out Style.

Where grilled chicken clearly wins is sodium. The 3-piece chicken strips carry 2,130 mg of sodium before you add a sauce, nearly four times the plain grilled sandwich. If you are building a lower-sodium tray, grilled chicken is the better base. For the breaded side of the menu, compare the chicken strips, nuggets and wraps.

Cookout Tray

How Many Calories Is a Cook Out Chicken Tray?

A Cook Out chicken tray can land anywhere from about 648 calories to well over 1,100, depending on the style, sides and drink. Our lightest grilled build totals 648 calories with 38 g of protein; the high-protein Cheddar build reaches 51 g of protein in 828 calories.

BuildWhat you orderCalories (entree + side + side + drink)ProteinSodium

Club tray (estimate)Club Style chicken + hushpuppies + cheese bites (tray sides) + regular Coca-Cola565 + 300 + 150 + 140 = 1,15545 g2,359 mg

Each total adds Cook Out’s published figures for the entree, two tray-size sides and a regular drink. Tray-side portions (onion rings, nuggets, hushpuppies, Cook Out Rounds and cheese bites) are the half-size servings on Cook Out’s nutrition sheet, not full orders. The Club tray uses our estimated Club protein and sodium, so treat that row as approximate.

  • The drink matters most. A regular sweet tea adds 236 calories; unsweet tea and Diet Coke add none.
  • Hushpuppies are the heaviest common tray side at 300 calories, more than twice the onion rings side (128).
  • Nuggets as a side add 10 g of protein for 144 calories, a smart pairing with grilled chicken.
  • Sodium adds up. Even the lightest build passes 1,300 mg, more than half the daily value.

The Cook Out calorie calculator lets you swap any side or drink and see the new total, and the Cook Out tray menu guide lists every side you can choose.

Extras

What Sauces Go With a Cook Out Chicken Sandwich?

Honey mustard and BBQ sauce are already on the Original and Barbeque styles, and you can ask for a sauce cup on the side; the commonly cited figures are about 60 calories for honey mustard or BBQ and about 140 for ranch. Cook Out’s nutrition sheet does not list dipping-sauce cups, so these are approximate third-party numbers.

Dipping sauce (1 oz cup)CaloriesFatSodiumOriginal Style + 1 cup
Honey mustard604 g120 mg453 calories
BBQ sauce600 g180 mg453 calories
Ranch14015 g230 mg533 calories

Ranch is the one that changes the math: one cup adds more calories than any grilled style’s toppings except Club and Cheddar. If you like a creamy sauce with your chicken, Original Style already has mayo and honey mustard, so an extra cup is often more than you need. Texas Pete comes on the Cajun Style sandwich and is a near-zero-calorie way to add heat. For the full lineup, see the Cook Out sauces guide.

Ordering Guide

How Do You Order a Chicken Sandwich at Cook Out?

Name the sandwich and the style, for example “char-grilled chicken, Cajun Style” or “spicy chicken, Cheese Style,” then add any changes such as “no mayo.” For a tray, say the tray first, then the chicken style, two sides and a drink.

A typical order sounds like: “Cookout Tray, chicken Original Style, onion rings and hushpuppies, regular Cheerwine.” If you just say “chicken sandwich,” expect the crew to ask which style or whether you want grilled or spicy.

First-timer tip: Start with Original Style. It adds only 16 calories to the plain breast and the least sodium of any dressed style, and lettuce, tomato and honey mustard keep it fresh.
  • Cookout Tray (entree + 2 sides + drink): about $7.39–$7.99
  • Jr. Tray: from about $5.29
  • Milkshake: about $3.99, with 40+ flavors
  • Club and Cheddar styles: older store listings show them priced above Original, Barbeque and Cajun; check your store’s board

What does “reg chicken” mean at Cook Out?

On the store menu listings we checked, the only chicken item labeled “Regular” is the Regular Spicy Style, the spicy fillet with lettuce, tomato and mayo. If you want a grilled sandwich, say the style name, such as Original, so there is no confusion at the speaker. If you want a plain grilled breast on a bun, ask for it plain.

Customizing your chicken

  • Swap toppings: “Cajun Style, no mayo” or “Original, add pickles” are normal requests; extras may cost more.
  • Sauce on the side: handy for BBQ or honey mustard if you are driving.
  • Check the bag late at night. Grilled and spicy sandwiches look alike in the wrapper.

Most Cook Out stores open around 10:30 AM and stay open until about 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and 4 AM Friday and Saturday, but hours vary by store; see the Cook Out hours guide. Payment is cash or card at most locations, and most stores are drive-thru and walk-up only.
