Augusta History

When Did Cook Out Come to Augusta?

Cook Out reached Augusta in 2013, when its first store opened at 1801 Walton Way on the site of a former Hess gas station. Over the next few years the chain added stores on Jimmie Dyess Parkway, Washington Road and Peach Orchard Road, giving Augusta the four it has today.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina.

2013: Cook Out enters Georgia in Statesboro, then Augusta. The Atlanta food-news blog Tone to ATL reported in August 2013 that the Walton Way store was going up on a former Hess station lot, not far from what was then Augusta State University; a reader comment on that post said the store opened that September.

Late 2013–2014: A second Augusta-area store follows on Jimmie Dyess Parkway near Fort Gordon. By August 2014 the same blog counted two Augusta stores and listed 2910 Washington Rd as coming soon, in a former Fazoli’s that had become Crazy Turks Pizza & Grill.

2016: Plans are reported for a fourth Augusta store at 3012 Peach Orchard Road, on the site of a former Golden Corral that had most recently been an Asian buffet.

Today: Cook Out’s locator lists 46 open Georgia stores as of October 2026, including all four Augusta locations.

We have not found reliable published opening dates for the Jimmie Dyess, Washington Rd or Peach Orchard Rd stores, so this guide gives only the years they were reported as planned. The order is still telling: Cook Out started in the medical district, then followed Augusta’s growth west toward Fort Gordon and Columbia County, and finally filled in the south side.

For all 46 Georgia stores from Atlanta to Savannah, see the Cook Out Georgia guide.

Coming from each direction

  • From Atlanta on I-20 east: exit 194 puts you on Jimmie Dyess Pkwy toward the west Augusta store; exit 199 at Washington Rd is the easiest stop of all, a few hundred yards from the ramp.
  • From Columbia on I-20 west: after crossing the Savannah River, keep going to exit 199 for Washington Rd. If you are already hungry in South Carolina, the Aiken store is about 19 miles east of Augusta.
  • From Savannah or Waynesboro (US-25): US-25 comes into south Augusta as Peach Orchard Road, so the 3012 Peach Orchard Road store is right on your route.
  • From Fort Gordon: Jimmie Dyess Pkwy (SR 383) begins at Gordon Highway just north of Gate 1, so the Jimmie Dyess store is the shortest drive off post.
  • From Evans and Martinez: follow Washington Rd southeast or Belair Rd south; Belair Rd becomes Jimmie Dyess Pkwy south of I-20.

A useful local detail: SR 383 is Jimmie Dyess Parkway only on its southern end. North of Park West Drive, just south of I-20, it becomes South Belair Road and then North Belair Road on the way to Evans, so a Belair Road address and the Cook Out on Jimmie Dyess are on the same highway.

Late-Night Food

Is There a Cook Out Near Augusta University, Fort Gordon or the Hospitals?

Yes. The Walton Way store is the closest Cook Out to Augusta University’s Health Sciences campus and the Medical College of Georgia, and the Jimmie Dyess Pkwy store is the closest to Fort Gordon. Both keep the chain’s typical late hours, which matters in a city full of night-shift workers and soldiers.

Medical College of Georgia & Wellstar MCG HealthThe academic hospital at 1120 15th St, formerly Augusta University Medical Center, joined Wellstar in 2023. Residents, nurses and students coming off a late shift can reach 1801 Walton Way in a few minutes.

Children’s Hospital of GeorgiaThe 154-bed children’s hospital on the same medical campus means plenty of families pass through midtown at odd hours. Walton Way is the closest drive-thru.

Augusta University Summerville campusThe former Augusta State University campus on Walton Way, now part of Augusta University, is a short drive east to the Walton Way store.

Fort GordonHome of the Army’s Cyber Center of Excellence, the post was renamed Fort Eisenhower in 2023 and became Fort Gordon again in June 2025, now honoring Medal of Honor recipient Master Sgt. Gary Gordon. Jimmie Dyess Pkwy runs north from Gordon Hwy near Gate 1.

Augusta National & the MastersThe club at 2604 Washington Rd is about a mile southeast of the Washington Rd store. During tournament week in April, expect heavier traffic and longer lines on Washington Rd.

Hospitals on Walton WayPiedmont Augusta’s main hospital is also on Walton Way, a short drive from the 1801 Walton Way store, so the same store works for staff and visitors there.

If you are new to Fort Gordon, the Jimmie Dyess store is the easy answer for a late meal after leaving post, and Washington Rd is a good backup when you are already on I-20. Students living near the Summerville campus usually find Walton Way faster than driving out to Washington Rd.

Local Comparison

How Does Cook Out Compare to Other Fast Food in Augusta?

Cook Out’s edge in Augusta is a full tray for under $8 and a drive-thru that stays open until about 3 or 4 AM, long after most of the burger and chicken chains on Washington Rd, Peach Orchard Rd and Walton Way have closed. Around-the-clock diners such as Waffle House are the main late-night alternative.

Each Augusta Cook Out sits in a busy fast-food corridor. The Walton Way store was built near a KFC and a Burger King, and the Peach Orchard Rd store shares the I-520 exit 7 area with Applebee’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Waffle House and Krispy Kreme. Washington Road, which runs past Augusta National toward Martinez and Evans, is one of the city’s main restaurant strips. Cook Out competes on price, menu range and hours.
