How It Compares

How Does Cook Out Compare With Decatur’s Local Favorites?

Cook Out is Decatur’s late-night value play; for a sit-down barbecue meal, the city’s own legend is Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q. They do different jobs.

  • Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q: founded in Decatur in 1925 by Bob Gibson, it is famous for hickory-smoked chicken dunked in Alabama white sauce (mayonnaise, vinegar and black pepper). It has two Decatur restaurants, on Sixth Avenue and Danville Road, and closes in the evening.
  • Krispy Kreme next door: shares the 1654 Beltline Road address, so a Cook Out milkshake and a box of doughnuts is a common combo.
  • Beltline chains: the Beltline has a long list of national burger and chicken chains, but few serve as late as Cook Out or bundle two sides and a drink at tray prices.

Cook Out’s barbecue is North Carolina-style chopped pork, which is different from Big Bob Gibson’s smoked chicken and white sauce. Locals who want both cultures can try a Cook Out barbecue tray one night and Big Bob’s the next.
