South Carolina Timeline

How Did Cook Out Spread Across South Carolina?

Cook Out, founded in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by Morris Reaves, grew into South Carolina from the north, and local news coverage shows a steady push into the coast and the Midlands over the last decade and a half, often by taking over former fast-food buildings.

June 2012 — Charleston: Live 5 News reported long lunch lines when Cook Out opened at 2036 Savannah Hwy in West Ashley, in a former Checkers building.

2013 — Horry County: According to Horry County News, Cook Out opened its first Horry County restaurant in Conway near Coastal Carolina University in 2013, followed months later by a store in an old Burger King on Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.

Late 2023 — Beaufort and Moncks Corner: The Island News reported Cook Out buying the former Burger King building at 2434 Boundary St in Beaufort, after an earlier plan for the old Golden Corral site on Robert Smalls Pkwy was dropped. A Moncks Corner store at 646 Rembert C Dennis Blvd was announced at the end of 2023.

2024 — Carolina Forest and West Columbia: WMBF News showed construction on 174 Fresh Dr, just off International Dr in Carolina Forest (May 2024), and The State reported plans for 1413 Charleston Hwy in West Columbia on a former Hardee’s site (April 2024).

2026 — Killian Road and Seneca: The Post and Courier reported a store coming to 1331 Roberts Branch Pkwy off I-77 in northeast Columbia (July 2026), now open on the locator. Seneca, at 1053 Bypass 123, is listed as coming soon in October 2026.
