How Did Cook Out Grow in Nashville and Tennessee?

Cook Out started in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1989 and reached Tennessee in 2010, with its first store in Johnson City, according to The Tennessean. Nashville came later as the chain worked west along I-40 and I-24.

1989: Morris Reaves opens the first Cook Out on Randleman Road in Greensboro, NC. The company is still privately owned and based in North Carolina.

2010: Cook Out enters Tennessee in Johnson City, in the northeast corner of the state.

April 2016: Bisnow Nashville reports that Cook Out bought the 5802 Charlotte Pike property, then occupied by a KFC. That address is now Cook Out’s West Nashville store.

Today: Nashville has 3 open stores, with Madison, Smyrna, Lebanon and Murfreesboro around it and three more Davidson County stores listed as coming soon. Tennessee counted 40 open stores in October 2026.

We have not found reliable public opening dates for the West End and Gallatin Pike stores, so we do not list one. If you know a documented date, the store’s own signage or local news coverage is the best source.

Getting There

Which Interstates and Roads Lead to Nashville’s Cook Out Stores?

Each city store sits on an old radial pike rather than right at an interstate exit, so plan on a few minutes of surface-street driving. The suburban Smyrna, Madison and Lebanon stores are the true interstate stops.

  • I-40 travelers (Memphis–Knoxville): West End Ave and Charlotte Pike are both a short hop off I-40 on the west side of downtown. Coming from the east, the Lebanon store is under a mile from I-40 exit 238 (US-231).
  • I-65 travelers (Louisville–Birmingham): northbound or southbound, the Madison store near exit 96 (Rivergate Pkwy) is the easiest stop north of town.
  • I-24 travelers (Chattanooga–Clarksville): Smyrna’s store on Sam Ridley Pkwy W is by exit 70, about 18 miles southeast of downtown.
  • Briley Parkway and Ellington Parkway: the fastest way across the east side to Gallatin Pike, especially from Donelson, the airport and Opry Mills.
  • I-440: links Belmont, Green Hills and Sylvan Park to West End and Charlotte Pike without going through downtown.

West End Ave is US-70S, Charlotte Pike is US-70 and Gallatin Pike is US-31E, so all three show up on older highway maps too.

Campus & Hospital Late-Night Food

Late-Night Hours

What Time Does Cook Out Close in Nashville?

Most Cook Out stores open at 10:30 AM and close around 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and around 4 AM on Friday and Saturday. Hours vary by store and can change for weather, staffing or holidays, so check the store before a late drive.

DayTypical openingTypical closing
Sunday–Thursday10:30 AMAbout 3:00 AM
Friday–Saturday10:30 AMAbout 4:00 AM
Major holidaysVariesOften shortened or closed

That late close is why Cook Out is a post-show stop after the Ryman, Bridgestone Arena or a night on Lower Broadway. The drive-thru is the main way to order; most Nashville-area stores have no indoor dining room, and the walk-up window is handy when the drive-thru line backs onto the pike.

We do not publish store-by-store hours because they are not posted in one reliable place. Our Cook Out hours guide covers holidays and late-night details.

How Does Cook Out Compare to Nashville Favorites?

Cook Out wins on price and late hours, not on local character. Nashville’s own institutions — hot chicken, meat-and-threes and old-school burger stands — are where you take visitors; Cook Out is where you go at 1 AM with $8.

OptionWhat it is known forWhen Cook Out makes more sense
Hot chicken (Prince’s, Hattie B’s and others)Nashville’s signature dish; Hattie B’s original is in Midtown on 19th Ave SLate at night, on a budget, or when lines are long
Bobbie’s Dairy DipSeasonal walk-up burgers and dipped cones in Sylvan ParkAfter dark or in the off-season; Charlotte Pike is the nearby fallback
Meat-and-threesSouthern plate lunches, mostly daytimeEvenings and weekends when they are closed
Waffle House24-hour breakfastWhen you want a burger or shake instead of eggs
Krystal and other national chainsDrive-thru burgersWhen you want a full tray with two sides for about $8

Many locals treat Cook Out as the cheap, late, filling option that fills the gap after hot-chicken counters close.
