1. South Hampton Roads — 8 Cook Out locations

Virginia Timeline

When Did Cook Out Come to Virginia?

Morris Reaves founded Cook Out in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1989. The chain has been growing in Virginia since at least 2010, when its first Richmond-area store opened on Eastridge Road in Henrico. These are the Virginia milestones that local news coverage confirms.

December 2010: The first Richmond-area Cook Out opens on Eastridge Rd in western Henrico (Richmond BizSense).

Summer 2011: A second Richmond store opens at 4802 W Broad St near Staples Mill Rd, in a former Bullets building.

Late 2011: Blacksburg and Radford open, putting Cook Out within reach of Virginia Tech and Radford University.

2012: Lynchburg opens in March, Harrisonburg follows soon after, and Danville opens in October.

2013: Cook Out buys a former Wells Fargo branch at 4300 S Laburnum Ave in eastern Henrico for its third Richmond store.

2017: Plans are announced to replace a Captain D’s at 4245 Pouncey Tract Rd in Short Pump, and to replace a vacant furniture store at 720 E Little Creek Rd in Norfolk.

September 2019: The Collinsville store opens in Henry County, serving the Martinsville area.

December 2021: Winchester opens at 1551 S Pleasant Valley Rd, the northernmost Virginia store.

2022: Cook Out buys a former Long John Silver’s at 2809 Franklin Rd for Roanoke’s second store (August). Manassas Park, Northern Virginia’s first store, holds its ribbon-cutting on November 4.

2026: The locator shows 42 open stores and four coming soon.

Many Virginia Cook Outs moved into former fast-food buildings: Long John Silver’s sites in Charlottesville, Madison Heights and Roanoke, and a Captain D’s in Short Pump. A former KFC at 1010 Independence Blvd in Virginia Beach was sold to Cook Out in 2021. That store still shows as coming soon on the locator.

How Does Cook Out Compare to Virginia’s Late-Night Favorites?

Cook Out’s draw is variety and price: for under $8 you get a full tray and a shake, late into the night. Virginia also has a few historic hometown counters worth knowing about, and some of them are close to a Cook Out.

Texas Tavern and Texas Inn are known for one style of chili burger. Cook Out’s Big Double “Cook Out Style” is a similar idea, but you also get two sides and a drink. Doumar’s, near the Monticello Ave Cook Out in Norfolk, is the place for a dessert cone. Cook Out is better for a 40-flavor milkshake menu, and it’s open much later. Wawa and Sheetz stay open around the clock, but a full Cook Out tray usually costs less than a comparable built-to-order meal at either one.
